Actually released in Europe by Japan Shock not so long back, and apparently cocked up somehow (cropped or bodged aspect ratio, video not “too hot” or something along these lines), the films a 1974 example of the kind of film we will see coming soon from other labels in America - it’s a ‘girls with guns’ film done in a style similar to other violent 70s Japanese films like ‘Lone Wolf and Cub’ in that its clearly very stylishly shot and relatively Manga-esque in so many ways. Yes, it was the first ‘Zero Woman’ film, and I love the trailer.

This American release though is from a new label called ’Discotek Media‘ that declares it has rights to the following also : ‘Animal Treasure Island’ and ‘Puss In Boots’ anime films (with some work by Hayao Miyazaki in both), Toho Studios 1974 live action ‘Lupin the 3rd’ movie and their ‘War in Space’ & ‘Bye Bye Jupiter’ sci-fi flicks, ‘Taro the Dragon’ (1979), ‘Burst City’ by Sogo Ishii, ‘Sexy Soccer’ (apprently an odd Cat III movie from HK), rare Kiyoshi Kurosawa acting performance in ‘Robokill Beneath the Discoclub Layla’, and another ‘Lupin’ movie - this time the anime film ‘Legend of Gold Babylon’.

Apprently they’re also looking for suggestions for future releases, and as they seem a little more from the fans perspective I would say it’s a good opportunity to do this in the comments and I will let them know I’ve requested input here…

Wow..this is great news.I was actually gonna buy a bootleg copy of Zero Women and School Of The Holy Beast off ebay recently. But now since their both getting official region 1 releases I’ll wait.I’ve been reading Asian Cult Cinema for years and would love see some more of these types of films released.Maybe even a couple of the more popular “pink” films might be a good idea too.I have yet to actually watch one but some of them sound interesting from what I’ve read.

    Woohoo!

Another vote for Burst City & Crazy Thunder Road! (And if they’re looking for more great Asian cult/pinku films to consider, most of Koji Wakamatsu’s output is in sore need of proper release.)
