Yuthlert Gets Serious With THE LAST MOMENT

Though best known for his splattery genre efforts such as Buppah Rahtree and Ghost of Valentine, Thai director Yuthlert Sippapak has a much broader range than that.  He’s done goofy slapstick comedy, full out action films and serious drama and he’s returning to that final genre with his latest project, a romance titled The Last Moment.

Is love even worth having, if it happened at the last moment of your life? A story of 3 best friends who never meant to hurt each other. What is more important … love or friendship?

Payu, Nam, and Fah are best friends. Unfortunately, they are also part of their own love triangle. Even though this kind of love cannot last for very long, it does not mean that it is any less meaningful or beautiful. One thing that is for sure is this love will live eternally in their hearts. Last doesn’t always have to mean the end, it could also mean forever.

Yuthlert’s never really gotten the respect he deserves internationally - the man is a very talented writer, shoots great film and pulls quality performances out of his actors - and with any luck this will turn the heads of a few who have boxed him up as a pure genre film director and forgotten about him.  The Last Moment hits Thai screens in June.

It doesn’t help that hardly any of Yuthlert’s films have been released on English-friendly DVD. I think only Killer Tattoo and the first Buppha Rahtree made it. One of my favorites is his comedy Sai Lor Fah (Lightning Rod or Pattaya Maniac)—but no luck getting that on subtitled DVD. Same goes for the under-rated Krasue Valentine.

    Who’s producing this upcoming film?

It’s going out via GMM Tai Hub but near as I can tell he produces all of his stuff through his own company.

Thanks for that, Todd. Good stuff.

Yeah, he has his own production marque—Mahagan Films—but has bounced around from company to company for distribution. His last couple efforts were with Sahamongkol, but he’s been with Grammy before, too. RS Film produced Killer Tattoo. I guess no matter what company is distributing, the tone of his film remains firmly in his hands.

It could be a contrast from the films produced in-house at Grammy.
