The official website for Will Fredo’s Compound is online, and there are both a downloadable trailer for and a downloadable clip from the movie on that site. Compound is scheduled to have its world première at the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) on March 24th (technically, March 25th) at 12:00 a.m., and to subsequently be screened there on March 25th at 4:30 p.m..

The screenplay for Compound was written by Fredo. The movie stars John Arcilla as Virgilio delos Reyes, Janet Russ as Divina delos Reyes, Jake Macapagal as Jay Juanillo, Liza Diño as Romina Sta. Maria, Joan Palisoc as Luisa delos Reyes, Perry Escaño as Boyong ‘Big Boy’ Gallardo, Lily Chu as Rachel Juanillo, Marq Dollentes as Gary Mendoza, Samantha Zialcita as Col. Lecaroz, Eryk Tipgos as Teddy Enriquez, Sarah Rebueno as Michelle Mendiola, Regina Davin as Sonya Enriquez, Amanda Virrey as the Collette Radio newscaster, Bong Cabrera as the Bong Radio newscaster, Andrew Gordon as Wendell, and Claire Lee as Georgette Uy.

Here’s a synopsis for Compound from the official website for the movie: “Shielding his family from a looming misfortune, Virgilio delos Reyes keeps appearances and calm through the aid of crystal methamphetamine. Virgilio and his wife received Jay Juanillo as their tenant to occupy one of the houses in their compound. Jay, who himself is trying to escape the realities of his life, settles in and builds relations with the delos Reyes family. From the seeming idyllic setting, Jay witnesses the slow implosion of the delos Reyes family and gets tangled in the power struggle within the compound. As Virgilio’s paranoia escalates, Jay becomes an easy target, a scapegoat of Virgilio’s inability to distinguish reality and hallucination. When their strategies of escape break down and reality catches up with them, the violence outside the gates finds its way into the compound.”

Here’s a description of Compound from the page for the movie on the CIFF website: “Life within the gates of the compound is seemingly idyllic. Wealthy and attractive husband Gil and wife Divina are both focused on keeping up appearances; she with plastic surgery and he with crystal methamphetamine. But when they take in Jay as a tenant, reality begins to confront them in their own home. Coming to the compound in order to escape his own imperfect way of life, Jay is welcomed as a member of the family. But when Gil is no longer able to ignore imminent financial ruin and the threat of terrorist violence, Jay becomes the focus of Gil’s increasing paranoia. A bevy of secrets and sex ultimately create an intense power struggle that, when hallucinations cannot be distinguished from reality, leaves everyone living in the compound vulnerable. A stunning visual achievement, COMPOUND is a contemporary thriller that deals with the complexities of love, wealth, and fear. A perfectly unexpected and well-executed ending make this a film not to be missed.”

I was there and saw it all! It was riotous and fun and exciting! Well, I am proud and excited to let you know that the film “Compound” was a hit! No we did not win any of the few awards given out but apparently according to some of the orginizers, we had the most number of people to turn away because of limited seatings. We had a well-attended midnight showing but Saturday’s regular showing was incredibly well-received. We had to sit the regular pass holders first and they basically already filled the house. There were two lines of regular and standby ticket holders patiently waiting outside - out of which only 20 were accomodated in. It was so so exciting to see this much interest in our first efforts to tell our stories. I am discussing with Will and the other producers about the possibility of doing another screening in Cleveland for those who missed it last Saturday. We met some interested distributors and other film folks who have expressed major interest in the film. Yehey!

And about the Phlippines showing of “Compound.” Of course it will happen. It is, after all, for all the Pinoys that this film was intended for to begin with. It will be sooner than you think! See you in the theaters soon!
