I don’t know about you but I love whales. To eat that is. Whale meat is one tasty sumbitch and even though the rest of the world frowns upon whale hunting and the consumption of whale I’ll gladly put down a few kronas for fine whale steak whenever I get the chance. Here in Iceland the two camps, anti-whale hunting and pro-whale hunting are waging a fierce war against each other both claiming to know better but I don’t care either way, I mean I love the meat but if they stop hunting I won’t be crying myself to sleep any time soon.
I’m sure some of the whale hunting promoters would love to show them animal lovers a thing or two but I doubt that will ever happen for real so maybe a film would help satisfy their anger. Maybe.
Gunnar (Leatherface) Hansen will be making his Icelandic film debut in the outlandishly named horror film Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre that will be produced and directed by Julius Kemp. Kemp has broken a few grounds in Icelandic filmmaking, making the first comedy drama aimed at teens “Wallpaper: An erotic love story” and then the legendary “Blossi/81551”, also a teen oriented road movie filled with pop culture references. That was in the 90’s and the man hasn’t directed a feature since then. He has however been busy producing and his latest venture in that game is the often-mentioned-around-these-parts Astropia, the first Icelandic “fantasy” film, which is currently the number one film in the country. He’s also co-producing the Finnish horror film Dark Floors featuring the rock band Lordi that recently finished shooting.
For those who don’t know, Gunnar Hansen is an Icelander through and through and we are damn proud of him to be so.
Here is what the production site had to say about the film “An epic tale about a group of whale watchers, whose ship breaks down and they get picked up by a whale fisher vessel. The Fishbillies on the vessel have just gone bust, and everything goes out of control.”
Hansen will play the captain of the ship but no other actor has been attached to the project so far. The last time I heard, and that was a while ago, Sjón (Oscar nominee for Dancer in the Dark) wrote the script, which some said was no good. I can’t comment on that but Icelanders have no local horror genre to look to and Sjón isn’t exactly known for his horror writing. But we’ll see how it will go. Latest rumours said that filming had been postponed until next year.
The film will be co-produced by the Finnish company Solar Films and will get funding from the Icelandic Film Center.
