Weinstein Watch: Seven Swords North American Rights

According to Screendaily, the Weinsteins have picked up theatrical and DVD rights in North America for Tsui Hark’s polarizing martial arts epic, Seven Swords. There has certainly been a fair bit of debate about the merit/quality of the film on this site around the time of its Toronto Film Festival screenings. Let us wait and see what the Brothers W. plan on doing with the film. All cynicism aside, your guess is probably as good as mine, as I do not see Hark’s attempted throwback to an earlier style of wuxia to go down well with a wide American audience, and it is not the right film for the arthouse crowd. On the other hand, the title and concept are a relatively easy sell if the Weinsteins put some marketing muscle behind it.

    You’re not the only one, but...I fear this will never see the light of day (the “real” 13th warrior, anyone?...or even the John Woo’s 2 hours Hard target)…

    I’d like to see the “real” 13th Warrior, as well. It really felt like a lot was cut out of it, which really took me out of the experience, at times.

    by this time I feel that if you are dealing with the weinsteins you deserve whatever comes your way, unless your a new kid on the block.

    I saw the Hong Kong DVD a few weeks ago. The film is two and a half hours long. It’s not bad, but it’s not one of as good as earlier Tsui Hark films. You can check out my review on my blog. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Weinstein’s cut and shelve this one too.
