Not one to be left out of the 80s cartoon remake race Warner Bros. Pictures has optioned another script, this one by Paul Sopocy, to turn the popular 1983 animated series Thundercats into a live action feature. This makes it two, as WB announced they would be moving ahead with a live-action adaptation of another 80’s cartoon, He-Man. Who has G.I.Joe and Strawberry Shortcake? Anyone?!

The original series story revolves around a group of humanoid cats who must flee their planet of Thundera after it’s destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off. Sopocy’s script is described as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats - DarkHorizons

Now, if I may suggest that someone from Warner call the band Relient K and pay them a ridiculous amount of money to use their song ‘I’m Lion-O’ you would make me a happy man.

Reports on another site say that it is going to be CGI, not live action.

Please stop. This show was terrible.

silly idea.  But if G.I Joe and Transformers get movies, what the hey, I guess there is an audience for this stuff.

Thank you Mack for this bit of news! I can’t say that I was a big fan of the show (thought the cartoon was a bit too kid friendly). I did however love the concept, plot and character designs. Hoping the film adaptation will be more epic and action oriented. Rankin/Bass’ other cartoon “team’ series like “SilverHawks” and “TigerSharks” had some pretty cool concepts as well.

I think this could only work as a animated feature. Seeing actors in that look would just look silly (check out that Thundercats fan film on youtube). Do it TMNT style and I think it could do good things.

I recall when they attempted to make a live-action film in the late 90’s, with Wesley Snipes as Panthro I believe. Does anyone know why the project was snuffed back then?
