Another one culled from our forum here, this one posted by Jon Pais. If you’re not already keeping tabs in there, you really should be ...

Director Choi Dong-hoon’s previous film, The Big Swindle drew the inevitable comparisons to Tarantino that come with any youn gfilm maker attempting an ironic, dialogue driven crime caper these days but based on the trailers if you must make a western comparison for his latest, War of Flowers, the correct one would be Guy Ritchie. The pre-Madonna Ritchie, just to be clear. Not only does the card table set up smack of Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels but he’s even gone and cast someone who’s got the looks of a Korean Nick Moran in one of the leads.

    Don’t forget Kim Hye-Soo (& her double-barrelled charms!)
Which one looks like Nick Moran? Cho Seung-woo (young guy from Marathon) or Yoo Hae-jin (character actor who’s in everything; 1 of the clowns in King & Clown.) they’re both top of their generation/specialty, so no surprise in the casting. Thought Big Swindle resembled more the romantic heist ensembles going back all the way to Big Deal on Madonna Street, all those Jean Gabin/Delon masterplan films, w/ general dose of 70s car chase, blaxploitation music. The Tarantino comparison is what pop media filter keeps referring to, as it’s what young viewers are most familiar with.

It’s the shot at about the fifty second mark that got the Moran comparison for me. The hair cut, the basic bone structure of his face, the body language all say Moran to me.
