One more reason to buy the soon-to-be released Hong Kong DVD of Peter Chan’s The Warlords when it hits shelves on February 4th:  despite the international star power of Jet Lie, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau producer Andre Morgan has prepared a new, international cut of the film without any input from Chan and word is Chan’s version of the film will only be used for Asian territories.  Meaning what eventually hits screens here will not be the film Chan made.  Says he:  “I can’t say I’m comfortable with how things have turned out, but I’m open-minded. Buyers in each territory will be able to choose the cut they want or make a new one themselves.” Not comfortable, indeed ... word is this arbitrary move is putting a lot of strain on the next project Chan and Morgan had planned together.

I don’t get it.  I really don’t.  The film has three enormous stars, the trailers and promos are stellar, the press has been very positive ... I don’t see any reason for Morgan to tinker with this at all unless he simply thinks white people won’t sit through a couple hours of Asians on the big screen.

another case of a producer with delusions of becoming a director.
