Les Maîtres du Temps

Though nobody is coming right out and saying so the upcoming martial arts drama Wushu has all the hallmarks of being a legacy project for a pair of legendary names. Jackie Chan is on board as a producer for the picture, Sammo Hung starring in a key role, and both are no doubt perfectly aware that they are no longer young and that, with a couple of key exceptions, there simply is no younger generation ready to step in to the sorts of martial arts roles that the pair of them built their legendary careers on. And so they are making Wushu, a film that celebrates actual martial arts while using their very famous names to leverage some attention for a young generation of very skilled fighters.
Shot in an actual martial arts school in mainland China using authentic fighters the film is a drama about a skilled fighter switching disciplines in hopes of catching the attention of a girl. There’s no real flash here, no over the top brutality, instead the film is designed to showcase actual training techniques and actual fighting skills. And no doubt about it, these guys are good. Our friends at Quiet Earth pointed the way to a pair of new trailers for the picture yesterday but those versions were posted up on YouTube and, thus, look pretty much like crap. We’ve got much higher quality versions of both trailers embedded in the Twitch Player below the break.

I really like the idea behind this movie. Martial art films from the “5 little fortunes” era are kind of a dying art in Hong Kong. Nowadays your typical film star is just an easily marketed pop singer with no background or training in the Peking Opera school. Fight scenes are losing that acrobatic edge that made Jackie Chan and his ilk so amazing to watch on the big screen. Sure there are some glimmers of hope out there, and Yuen Wo Ping is holding an open casting call for his next film, but will it ever be like it was? Better yet, could we see something new and even better than before?

This looks really, really good. And I really, REALLY mean that.

looks excellent indeed. I’m glad they’re not trying to generate too much hype right now so it can have a bigger bang when it comes out
