Twitch-O-Meter: Tadanobu Asano is ready for his extreme close-up, Mr. deMille!

Posted in Twitch-O-Meter .

A couple of months back I posted 5 stills of Song Kang-Ho in the Twitch-O-Meter for people to guess which movie they were from, and I got a lot of positive feedback.
So let’s try this once more, with another Asian actor I love: Tadanobu Asano.

The first time I saw Tadanobu Asano was in Miike Takashi’s “Ichi the Killer”, and that’s the picture on the left. His Kakahira is a sight to behold, in fact it’s downright impossible to look away from him.

Seeing Asano in other movies was a bit of a revelation. Never mind what role he plays there is always a quiet dignity underneath. And when you see his face it’s like you can see straight into his soul, guarded or not. Humble, hurt, arrogant, lazy, simmering, rotten…
How exactly can he act so well, often seemingly without moving a single facial muscle? I honestly think I’ll never know.

But I think he’s very cool and my wife thinks he’s very handsome (she hasn’t seen “Ichi the Killer” yet...).
Thankfully his choice of movies is generally excellent, so for both of us a film will automatically get our seal of approval once we know he’s in it.

Which means that once again, instead of the usual list I’d like to do a gallery of 5 close-ups of another one of my favorite thespians.
Guess which 5 movies they’re from and I’ll post the answers Friday (earlier if someone has all 5 of them right).
No competition, no prizes, just for fun, try to see how far you get without using IMDB.

The “Ichi the Killer” pic doesn’t count as I gave it away already, but good luck with the other 5!

    Zatoichi
    Electric Dragon 80,000V
    The Taste of Tea
    Distance (?)
    Survive Style 5+

You’ve got me stumped on that 4th one.

  2. Ard Vijn 02/05/2008 @ 5:06pm

    Oooh!
    Four out of five…

  3. The Visualist 02/05/2008 @ 5:22pm

I’ll leave the last one to someone else since I’ll just be throwing out random guesses! The gunky window is throwing me for a loop. I might have a better idea if I could see his hair.

  4. Raku 02/05/2008 @ 5:22pm

I’m stumped on the 4th like the visualist arrrgh please someone get it or that is going to annoy me until Friday

  5. Ard Vijn 02/05/2008 @ 5:45pm

His hair is slicked back in the 4th (well, not this specific screenshot, but in general). And he has sideburns…

Heh, I was hesitating between using this movie or “Last Life in the Universe”. Seems I chose wisely.

    Good luck! cheese

    Sharkskin Man and Peachhip Girl?

  7. Geert Jan 02/05/2008 @ 7:07pm

Yeah I was thinking Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl for the 4th one as well.

  8. Raku 02/05/2008 @ 7:37pm

Sharkskin man and peach hip girl seems like it fits, Most likely its taken from a scene in the car with susumu terajima in the passenger seat.

I don’t think the 4th image is from SSM, but I don’t know.  It’s the only image amongst the 5 that isn’t immediately recognizable to me.

    4)sharkskin man

    hmm - not so bad.

btw, please feel sorry for me.  i couldn’t get away to drive to dc to see last life plus asano in person last saturday.  i’m not going to get over it for a while…

    Sorry guys,
I had to sleep for a few hours. Nice to see such a turn-up!

The 4th shot is indeed “Shark Skin Man & Peach Hip Girl”.
BlackIrishBastard was first, Raku has the scene right, and kudo’s to deedee if he/she ain’t lying!

    wink

Again this was solved really quickly! To be honest I thought the “Taste of tea” shot wasn’t that obvious but I was ‘obviously’ wrong.

I got Zatoichi and Sharkskin Man, which aside from Invisible Waves and Last Life (and Ichi), are the only Asano films I’ve seen. I want to watch more.

  14. crazybee 02/06/2008 @ 5:42am

His whole body of work is worth exploring.

And I can’t believe I didn’t recognize that image as being from SSM!  That’s one of my favorite movies!

  15. GAPS 02/06/2008 @ 6:12am

Got all those same ones Visualist got (except, you weren’t entirely incorrect, Aardvark - I was tossing up between Taste of Tea and Bird People of China).
Was stumped on that fourth one like everyone else - and no wonder! I saw SSM before I knew who he was - before I saw Ichi - and can’t correlate his image into my memory of the film, even though I now know better. Time to see it again.
From the image quality, I actually thought 4 might have been from one of his earlier slightly lesser known ones. Labyrinth of Dreams or Fried Dragon Fish or something.
But I guess you don’t want to pull too many fast ones!

  16. deedee 02/06/2008 @ 6:37am

no, i wasn’t lying - asano is on my short list of fave actors in the world, and i’ve seen many of his movies (but not most - they’re kind of hard to find.) it was kind of easy because he looks so different in each of his movies.

i got taste of tea because of the pillow and the shirt - just watched it (finally!) this weekend.  i got sharkskin man because of that smirk.

and i am a she, btw.  maybe that made it easier.

Ahh this post has been perfect for me.

I really enjoyed him in SSM (that is one of my favorite movies). He was great in Ichi, but haven’t really had a good base to go off from since then.

    Now I do, thanks.

Agree with DeeDee’s assessment. I did get to see Tadanobu Asano last Saturday at the Freer Gallery when he introduced Last Life in the Universe and at the Q&A;session following (sorry DD).  The film was obviously a well-used copy - but it worked well the the cinematography.  It was a fairly small theater and he was just as self-deprecating, funny, cool (and, yes, good-looking) as you would imagine.  He patiently answered all questions, provided some anecdotes about working in various locals and with different directors and stuck around to sign-stuff, etc.

thanks for the recap, chg.  now i really, *really* wish i’d been there.

one question:  was it crowded?  i had nightmares (literally) of driving 5 hours and there being no tickets left.  if it was packed then that makes me feel a little better about missing it.  i swear, at 8:45am last saturday i was still toying with the idea of shirking all my responsibilities and heading up to dc…

    sigh.

Good call on SSM people! I thought it might be initially, but I couldn’t be sure. He has this kind look in that still but his character is such an arrogant ass in that film! Ard was right about his preternatural ability to emote with little to no facial augmentation. It’s all in the eyes (notice the eyelids in each shot).

  21. chjdc 02/06/2008 @ 3:30pm

In reply to DD - I was worried about the crowd too, so I slogged down there two hours before tickets were released (3 b/f movie).  The line wasn’t bad and, unless you arrived pretty late, you got in with no problems.  It was a full-house -barely.  Either the word didn’t get out to the fans - or there aren’t enough fans in DC (which I find hard to believe). I doubt that makes you feel better - but maybe increases your chances of being able to make the next ‘happening’ in DC.  Hope to see you next time - and really hope there is a next time. C.

    dear c-

    argh.

thanks, and see you next time.
