   I love me some Tak Sakaguchi, I really do, I think they guy has fantastic charisma and is a good fighter, but goddamn, I really didn’t like Be a Man Samurai School. I thought it wasn’t funny enough to be a comedy, and it wasn’t serious and exciting enough to be an action movie, I found it to be a uncomfortable middle-ground which ended up making it not enjoyable in either category. I really hope Samurai Zombie or whatever its called is going to be better…

   I love myself some Tak, he seemed a swell enough guy when I chatted with him at Fantasia this year, but I agree with Zwan. Samurai School isn’t anywhere near funny enough to be a decent comedy nor does it contain enough action (What the hell!?) to be considered a decent action film. My fingers are crossed that Samurai Zombie (Which he co-wrote with Kitamura. Good or Bad sign?) suceeds at ONE of them.

   Two nearly identical reponses 3 hours apart.  Weird.  I’m looking forward to the film tomorrow anyway, and the live demo should be fun as well.

   I thought “Be a Man!” was pretty funny because it really isn’t far off from some of the testosterone-fueled shonen manga of the early 80s. I don’t think it’s really a gag comedy as much as it’s a spoof of a whole genre. The action scenes were more style than substance. Lots of close-ups and careful framing, not a lot of actual fighting.

   I thought it was a really good parody, granted, it captured the feel of those 80s manly delinquent mangas, but it failed to make me have a good time, look at Crows Zero, its pretty much the same thing, but done right, done very right If I may say so, that movie is funny AND has great action while capturing the mood of said types of manga perfectly, I just don’t know where it went wrong with Be a Man Samurai School, maybe crappy source material, but i can’t comment on that seeing as I haven’t read the original manga.

   While I think most of the choreography is good, the feel of the action is somewhat fake to me. Punches and kick don’t seem to connect as well as they should, thus making it all seemed a bit too staged.
