Always: Sunset on Third Street 2
[This post bumped up to the top as we’ve just gotten the trailer added to the brand-spankin’ new Twitch video player. Yes, I’m playing with a new toy.]
We’ve been covering the films of Adam Mason in these pages for some time now and I was more than a little excited to get an early peek at his latest, b>Blood River, at the just completed AFM. I offered my thoughts on the freshly cut trailer here and now you can take a look and judge for yourself since Mason has just offered Twitch readers an exclusive first look at the trailer. Something to keep in mind here is that this was cut together from completely raw, fresh out of the camera footage. There has been no color correction, no ADR, no nothing. What you’re looking at is exactly what was shot which makes just how good it looks that much more impressive ...
It’s 1969 and Clark and Summer are happily married and she’s pregnant. We first meet Summer and Clark as they are driving across California on their way to Arizona to tell Summer’s parents the good news about the pregnancy. They drive across the seemingly never ending and desolate desert landscape - they have a blow out. It’s a nasty one that sends the car into a massive, near fatal crash. They crawl out of it, hurt but alive, Summer terrified for the well being of her unborn child. The nearest place on the map is the uninviting sounding town of Blood River where they meet a mysterious stranger, Joseph. The clash between Joseph and Clark reaches fever pitch and drives our characters ever closer to a violent, destructive and shocking conclusion that will chill you to the bone.
Blood River is a twisted, manipulative trip into a world of extremes where people are rarely who they seem, where everyone has a secret and where few, if any, will survive.

An intriguing trailer to be sure. I dig the soundtrack (28 Weeks Later?) and the sweltering feel of the desert. The film looks like it will sink or swim based on it’s screenplay though. If it’s not too cheesy, it should fare well.

Oh yeah… kudos on the new video system here at Twitch. A valuable tool to have here me thinks. VERY valuable.

Thanks man! It’s got a little more work to go before it’s fully integrated but I’m really pleased that we’ve got it ...

Also, be on the lookout for an interview with Adam just as soon as he answers the follow up questions I sent him. Nudge, nudge.

Now this is how you put together a classy low budget flick. Three actors, a beautiful setting, and a straightforward looking-narrative with some really sure handed direction! I wasn’t really interested in the subject matter when I first heard about it, but now, consider me sold.

While I was not at all a fan of The Devil’s Chair. There is a vibe going here (I’m a sucker for ‘sunny horror’) that is really vicious (The Devil’s Chair was just too damn jokey for my tastes, it didn’t quite gel with the intense elements). I adore the aerial photography and the figures in long shot (tiny figures in the frame that suggest Ingmar Bergman to a degree (the death dance at the end of The Seventh Seal perhaps. An influence Adam?)
Yea, I’m excited for this one. Don’t hold my negativity about the first picture against me. I really hope to be won over this time.
Cheers.

You’ve got to give Mason some credit for pumping out such a prolific slate of genre films but I didn’t like Broken much at all and unfortunately this first clip reminds me a lot of Broken. I’m looking forward to seeing The Devil’s Chair though so hopefully my opinion will change. I do agree that the aerial photography (and the camera work in general) looks fantastic.
