[Many thanks to our new Turkish correspondent Zeren for bringing news on new Turkish crime film Munferit]

Crime cinema, has long been one of the shunned genres of Turkish cinema. Fortunately, in the last few years, there are signs indicating this may no longer be the case. Following the two movies released in 2007, Polis and Sis ve Gece (Fog and Night), a new crime movie, Münferit (Murky Waters), Dersu Yavuz Altun’s feature debut is announced to be released nationwide in Turkey, this coming year.

It competed in the 44th Golden Orange Film Festival last October and was screened in the Agora section of the Thessaloníki Film Festival in November. Münferit is being promoted as a film noir in its official website. Shot in Heybeliada, one of the few inhabited islands near Istanbul, on a shoestring budget, Münferit‘s production qualities looks pretty impressive from the trailer. Its complex story is based on the real facts from three different news articles. Being asked about the plot, director describes it as “the individual’s historical strandedness who has long lost his chance to decide upon his own life and future”.

The synopsis follows below the break, as does the trailer embedded in the Twitch Video Player.

You’d salt the meat when it stinks… what if the salt stinks?

In the midst of a night, an unexpected ferryboat approaches to the shores of a cute little town. On the deck, an inspector and his assistant – two highly commissioned authorities only assigned to very fragile cases concerning the governmental issues, scans the town from a distance.

Assistant - God… Who would believe that there has been so much colluding in such a sweet town…
Inspector - Nothing has leaked to the press, right?
Assistant - The deputy is very sensitive on the issue. Yet he has worked with us previously,

Inspector - If the press finds out then consider the sewer exploded. Whoever that smells the air will come running here, ones in Europe, States…
Assistant - Regional reporters cannot act on their own without our consent. If still there is leak then we can interfere at the editorial level.
Inspector - Whichever is the case, this shit will end and stay here!
Assistant - I hear you sir…

The feature opens with this conversation. Then we see two swollen corpses surfacing from underneath the water and a wrecked car being pulled out of the sea. One of corpses looks like a transvestite. Then we see the bodies of two children, dead, lying in the middle of a road – which adds up to a total of 4 casualties. Plus, many women living in this cute little town have been the victims of serial rapes. One of them, the teacher Aylin, wife of the floating transvestite, is being interrogated by the inspector and his assistant. As they ask her questions we go back in time and the connection between the bodies is slowly revealed. But there are secrets that should never be exposed.
