Good news for fans of Shinya Tsukamoto! His latest effort, Nightmare Detective, with Ryuhei Matsuda as a man able to insert himself into people’s dreams, has just arrived on English subtitled DVD in Singapore. The disc is letterboxed rather than anamorphic, which is unfortunate, but considering that this has been bought by the Weinstein Company who want it for remake purposes and have no stated plans for the original version there is a fighting chance that English friendly versions will be a rarity. The only other English option I’m aware of is the Italian disc released by Raro Video. That one comes with an anamorphic transfer but is also significantly more expensive than this Singaporean release.

Holding out for a big screen viewing of Tsukamoto’s latest. Missed it at fantasia, who knows, maybe I’ll get a chance to see it soon, eh? hmmm?

Tsukamoto’s Nightmare Detective screening theatrically in gorgeous 35mm subtitled in Toronto? Never going to happen…

I saw the RaroVideo release, and it looks good. The movie’s great, too. I think Tsukamoto fans will be happy. Plotwise, it’s more commercial than something like “Tetsuo” or “A Snake of June” (my fave Tsukamoto flick), but visually, it’s pure Tsukamoto.

Any insightful critique to go with the comment?

saw it yesterday (one point for the internet) and was pleasantly surprised after “more commercial” comments before: this movie is brutal and horrific in good ways. I like the whole premise, how it plays out and especially how it is filmed. we can argue about the 2 leads being....lacking some chemistry or even some acting, but the story calls for “on remote” acting so it fits the story well. I was frightened.
