We always knew he was going to make an interesting film one day. He’d already built quite a reputation making animated shorts and whimsical short comedies like Flower and Not Cool. And now he’s really gone and done it.
Liew Seng Tat has just completed his debut digital feature, Flower In The Pocket. And a 30-second trailer has surfaced on the Net. I’m happy to say that it’s one of the funniest trailers I’ve seen, even though it’s brief.
The synopsis on the Da Huang Pictures website says:
Li Ahh and Li Ohm grow up motherless. They are neglected by their father Sui, a workaholic who spends the bulk of his time mending broken mannequins in his workshop. While he shuts himself out from the world, the two brothers roam the streets, get into fights and other troubles in school but for all they want is just love and to be loved.
The film will be making its North American premier at the Vancouver International Film Festival next month, along with Woo Ming Jin’s The Elephant And The Sea, Yasmin Ahmad’s Gubra and Tan Chui Mui’s Love Conquers All.
Here’s what the festival says about Flower In The Pocket:
Liew Seng Tat’s first feature is constantly, quietly, astonishing. This story of two little brothers who seem to live on their own, and an introverted mannequin designer with an aching heart, is equal parts childhood idyll, absurdist comedy, gentle social satire and family mystery.
