Here’s a synopsis for The Virgin of Juarez from Dobson’s website for the movie: “The Virgin Of Juarez recounts the story of Karina Danes, a Los Angeles based reporter investigating the killings of hundreds of young women in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. While on assignment, Danes meets Mariela, a rare survivor of one of these vicious attacks. During her recovery, Mariela sees visions of the Virgin Mary and experiences the phenomenon of stigmata, the unpredictable and inexplicable appearance of wounds in her palms that mimic those Christ received when he was nailed to the cross. Mariela and her story soon draw a devout following, and her sermons galvanize a public in need of hope.”
Here’s a synopsis for The Virgin of Juarez from the Flash page for the movie on Fabrication Films’ website: “Investigating the serial killings of women in a Mexican border town, reporter Karina Danes (Minnie Driver) meets Mariela (Ana Claudia Talancon), an ethereal and charismatic survivor who gathers a cult following. Based on the ongoing unsolved murders in Ciudad Juarez, the film combines issues of politics, fanaticism and religion with murder and violence in Mexico and East LA.”

A must be seen movie, not only because Minnie and Claudia are superb, but also because the story gives a rare opportunity to analyze and to denounce the low interest demostrated by law enfforcement when comes to massive anihilation of women. The same has happened in Vancouver, British Columbia; and later near Prince George. Minnie Driver is one of the most highly talented NON COMMERCIAL ARTISTS of the world, and her personal commitment to this film and her fight in favor of OXFARM and in favor of women deserves attention and admiration. No doubt that this incursion of Minnie in Multicultural Cinema, will pave the road to see her in movies from Spain, Italy, France and Latin america. She is the quenn of the accents, even when She is not a hollywood merchant. She is an Artist!

Thank you Kevin James Dobson and Michael Fallon. Finally someone is finally trying hard enough to really open the eyes of the world this horrible horrible nightmare that we don’t see to be waking up soon. I hope your movie make the guys from “human rights watch”, put the women of juarez in their webpage. How many more women do we need to be torture and assasinated to consider these crimes against humanity? Can they see that this is only another very brutal and cynical example of how little women worth in some parts of the world, and how little we care about it?

I just read that there are two movies about the juarez murders. one with minnie driver (the virgin of juarez)and one with j-lo (bordertown). The word is that although the virgin of juarez is more realistic then bordertown, j-lo brings in the bucks so we wont be able to see minnie drivers version in the theaters. Kind of reminds me of minnie driver getting dumped to sing her own song from phantom of the opera at the (grammys ?) in favor of beyonce because beyonce brings in the bucks. Poor minnie cant get a break lately it seems. Oh well I will buy the virgin of juarez on dvd and they can keep j-lo
