Hellboy
Don’t know how convinced I am by the idea itself, but there’s an announcement that a Doctor Who spin-off called ‘Torchwood’ (it’s an anagram by the way) will go into production soon.
The 13 part show, said to be ‘more adult’ and ‘sexy’ is an odd idea (for BBC3s’ post-watershed (9pm) audience) - no direct overlap with Who itself, but instead a show which has similar themes and stars (John Barrowman, Captain Jack from the recent series will appear in this - he has already mentioned in interviews he reappears in Doctor Who during Series Three) without having the Doctor himself in the mix.
Odd, as the primary market for Doctor Who comprises children, adults who essentially are still children (hello sc-fi fans), or adults with a nostalgia for childhood - so where do the children fit in, as that’s always been the primary concern? The stories do tend to be adult, but it’s a TV oddity in that it’s a show for children with pretty adult content that doesn’t do more damage than that mix might suggest; you simply need to hide behind the sofa… we’ve all done it, and that was the thrill.
I still recommend the show to those not that familiar with the older incarnation of the show, the boxset is due soon here in the UK, and if that gets your interest I am sure many should look into the older shows and will find that a surprising pleasure also.

Doctor Who Series ‘One’ Boxset due November 21st 2005 on R2 UK DVD (see Amazon.co.uk page).

well, ive seen bits of it - and i would say it doesn’t really work, it all feels a little contrived and tentatively linked to doctor who… shame.
