Accuracy of Death
For the sake of a friend in need, Tony Leung Chiu-Wai is stepping back in the cast of John Woo’s The Battle of Red Cliff after Chow Yun-fat’s sudden departure. Tony previously pull out of his role as Zhuge Liang in March due to feeling inadequate with delivering his lines in Mandarin and the longing to take a break. His role was replace by Takeshi Kaneshiro so its expected that he will fill Chow’s role as general Zhou Yu. Props to Tony for taking one for the team. His presence will certainly bring a level of credibility to the film.

So will this film be full of actors trying to speak Mandarin phonetically? It doesn’t seem to bother most people but I found it extremely distracting in CROUCHING TIGER and I doubt this will be any different if it’s indeed what’s being done. I’d rather they let them speak Cantonese or whatever they are most fluent in and then dub it if it absolutely has to be Mandarin. I’m against dubbing movies but I’ll take a dub over phonetic performances any time.

I love Tony Leung and even though I’m sure that I will never see this film I think that it is a very nice thing to help a friend in this way. I like to see news like this

This. This kind of thing is why we love Tony Leung. And the really good acting only adds to it. He is the BEST. I wish him luck too though i feel he doesn’t need it.

Tony speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, and English quite well. The thing is, his Mandarin is not quite as good as his Cantonese, so he wants time to learn his lines better. Trust me, all of the actors are perfectly capable of delivering lines in decent Mandarin. And in Crouching Tiger, none of them were speaking phonetically--they all know Mandarin, some of them just had accents.
I’m glad to see Tony back in this project.
