I’m just on my way out the door to see Isolation - the angry, carnivorous mutant cow flick from Ireland - so I don’t have time to write up a full Banlieue 13 review at the moment - check Mathew’s and Kurt’s takes on the film in the archive - but I wanted to throw a few notes up about the screening ...
First, it kicked ass. This film looks absolutely fantastic on the big screen and the audience was lapping it up. You could hear their collective jaws hitting the floor throughout David Belle’s first chase scene and Toronto is now clearly in love with parkour. Second, Cyril Raffaeli was there - that’s him sporting the red eyes from hell in the photo to the left - and was a friendly, charming man who seemed ecstatic to be bringing the film to such a large appreciative audience. Things I learned in the Q&A:
A sequel has been discussed
Raffaeli has more than 60 films to his credit
Absolutely zero wires in the film, which means all those painful looking falls really happened
Belle had zero background in either martial arts or gymnastics before creating parkour
Raffaeli trained Belle, partially in Thailand, for two years to prepare for the film
We’ve talked about Banlieue a good bit around here already but it bears saying again: very fun flick that deserves checking out.
