Indonesian director Joko Anwar served notice with his romantic comedy Janji Joni that he was a talent to reckon with. His lighthearted effort did huge business throughout Asia and managed to be one of those rare titles that wins both critical and public praise. Good as it was, though, there was certainly nothing in there to hint that his next effort would be taking a much darker turn. The original title was Dead Time - it is now known as Kala - and that should tell you what you need to know about where this is going: Anwar has set out to make a full blooded action-noir. And now that a trio of teasers for the film have appeared on the production blog it appears as though he has succeeded. Yeah. This looks fantastic.

I wonder whether Joko will appear here as a cameo like he did in Janji Joni

My last comment got eaten by the Spam-killer. (Don’t start a post with “Sweet.")

Anyway, I like the look of the film and love the shot around the spiral staircase, for some reason a striking noir image to me.

I was among several people invited to see the final cut of the film. IT BLEW ME AWAY! This can be the best film ever came out from Indonesia. Yes, Kala (a.k.a. Dead Time) is a HUGE jump for Joko Anwar from Janji Joni (Joni’s Promise). Presented in a classic noir style with Joko paid great attention to details. There isn’t a single prop wasted without saying something. The screen geometries reminded me of Kurosawa’s. The images are striking. The acting is flawless. It’s amazing that some of the actors are first-timers, including the international model Fahrani in the lead. The story is also mind-blowingly unpredictable with some clever twists. I asked the producers about the budget and I was surprised they made it only with less than US$ 600,000 budget. The production value is amazing. And the music. Joko Anwar surely got good ears. I am so proud to be and Indonesian after watching this!

Mr. Sigit Pradityo, you are NOT the first guy who wrote about things you mentioned (neither is Joko Anwar). Search google and you’ll found many pages on them. But thanks for spoiling the film for the rest of us just for you to claim something that isn’t true. Dear admin, please kindly remove the part of the posting above that spoil the film. Many thanks.

i was totally amazed and surprized by this looking-fresh movie. KALA is a kind of combination between action-thriller, mystery, and horror, i personally think. the harmony of the sound and pict. effects in the movie is considered to be one big blow of this movie as being the qualified & recommanded and identically a modern movie. i love it and i thank you to all people who get involved in the film-making for entrtaining me much.
