Three Clips From Richard Kelly’s SOUTHLAND TALES

It’s been a long and winding road for Richard Kelly’s sophomore feature but the release date for Southland Tales is finally drawing near and a trio of clips have appeared online.  Now, I’m very much of the less-is-more camp when it comes to Kelly - I far prefer the original cut of Donnie Darko to the director’s cut which tries to explain a bit too much - so I’m not particularly bothered that he went back and made drastic cuts to the picture after it premiered at Cannes in 2006.  All I know is that Darko was one of the most intriguing debut films by an American director in years and even if this is the failure many expect it to be I expect it at least to be a fascinating failure.  And these clips seem to back that up.  Who knew The Rock could be this funny?  Someone get this guy out of the sappy Disney films, he’s got way too much natural charisma to be stuck doing that.  And Sarah Michelle Gellar had me laughing out loud as well.  Bring it on!

Be aware that the language is somewhat salty in these.

“Who knew The Rock could be this funny?”

Um, I don’t know…people who have seen him in…movies?  He’s funny all the time.

Except in the trailers for that new movie where he’s a football play who is surprised to find that he has an illegitimate kid.

The first clip didn’t work for me…

But this does indeed look fascinating…to say the least.  I can’t wait till November.  It still IS coming out in November, right?

Hey, I remember this movie!  Holy crap has this taken a long time to see the light of day.

I’ll be there, and I’m with Garth - The Rock’s a funny dude (except in DOOM - just kind of sad there).

It worked for me in 1:30 sized soundbites. The question is if it’ll also work as a 140 minute movie.
