Jô Odagiri is a busy fellow these days, threatening to become the next Tadanobu Asano. In 2005-2006 he had projects spanning from Seijun Suzuki’s Princess Raccoon to Kurosawa’s J-Horror Retribution to big effects ninja romance in Shinobi (these two featured at Twitch programmed Toronto After Dark in the coming weeks, so yes, we here like the man) to zany comedy in The Uchôten Hoteru to Ôtomo’s anime series re-creation Bugmaster. Treading in stylish comedy territor, below is the trailer for the feature debut of writer/director Masanori Tominaga, “Pavillion sanshouo.” (aka The Pavillion “Salamandre")

“This comic, sometimes manic, suspense story revolves around a legendary national ‘animal’ treasure, a giant salamander named Kinjiro who is a mystery concealed in a riddle. Behind the discord of four beautiful sisters, this entertaining film depicts with intense, somewhat wry humor, the entwining stories of the puzzling death of an actress, conspiracies and schemes between crime syndicates and the Kinjiro Foundation, as well as, love between a mother and daughter. ”

The official sites flash intro is nearly a trailer in itself and worth a look. Some silky jazz and techno TV-theme stylings await. I’m getting a slight Tears of the Black Tiger vibe off of this one.

Glad to hear that you guys like Joe, and that his movies are shown over there. I think he has surpassed Tadanobu Asano in one sense - he is all over the place, including TV dramas and TV CMs and is generally popular, vs. Asano insists on doing just indie movies. I LOVE his versatility. I wonder if you guys liked “House of Himiko”, my favorite, as well.
