In case the two disc set of 300 only whets your appetite for destruction this documentary offers a solid feature length History Channel look back at an event that helped shape the way men go to war. Using all the usual hi-tech methods and tons of expert testimony they recreate and exhaustively examine the battle itself and the immense ramifications of its outcome. As epic as Zack Snyders take on the legend is, this historically accurate look back is to my mind a necessary addition not to mention almost as engrossing. The Spartan warrior culture poses complex questions. It existed at a time when defense of Greek culture was vitally necesary for the burgeoning idea of democracy but it was incalculably cruel. Anybody out there really wish they could be a Spartan? man has never worn the mantle of idealism (militaristic or otherwise) very comfortably which makes 300 and the Spartan culture well worth your time, particularly here stateside where the danger of freedom being defined and administrated by fewer and fewer grows in increasing proportion to0 our idea of the glory of war.

... I was lucky enough to catch “TLSot300” when it aired on History Channel, and indeed they were extremely brutal to their young boys (and girls didn’t have it that easy either). I’m sure being able to watch it without those ever-annoying commercials will make a more immersive experience, and make me glad the Sparatans aren’t needed in this day and age (or are they?)..! wink ...
