Mark it down on your calendar.  September 1st is the day Neon Genesis Evangelion returns to theaters in Japan with the release of Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, the first of four announced new projects to be set in the Evangelion universe.  Details are sketchy on these so far beyond that they are entirely new material, this particular film—though not the subsequent three—will be a prequel scripted by Hideaki Anno who will supervise the rest of the series, and Kazuya Tsurumaki will direct.  Oh, and that’s the poster to the left.

A prequel? Really? The trailer for the first movie (a pirated, camcordered version is on YouTube) only showed scenes already familiar from the TV series, redone with better animation…

Yeah, all four films are supposed to be entirely new stories.

I always wondered how Evangelion posters managed to get away with being so damned cryptic and beautiful, sometimes only a half step from being a sort of abstract expressionistic piece of art with only an inferred relation to the show. A lot of Korean posters manage to exist almost as companion pieces to their films, ones that may only make sense after seeing the film (which I think is a great marketing ploy), but somehow Eva posters are in a world of their own.

Maybe it’s because everyone already knows what Eva is, at least those that’ll fork cash at the ticket booths, but how they managed to be so bold with their poster designs in this bottom dollar industry remains a mystery to me.

Actually, the first film in the series of four new films is actually a retelling of the first 6 episodes, which is why all the scenes in the trailer are from the series, only with better animation. I personally can’t wait!
