Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you’ve got to admire low budget LA production outfit The Asylum for their sheer tenacity and commitment to a very simple business model: find a hotly hyped film, then rush out a straight to video knock off timed to hit shelves at the same time the big picture is hitting screens. Thing is, some of The Asylum’s films are actually pretty good, some of them - Snakes on A Train being a prime example - actually getting more love than the films they are based on. Well, here comes another one. The latest from The Asylum is simply titled Monster and you know the drill: first person video diary of a giant monster attacking a big city, only in this one the people shooting the diary are women and the city in question is Tokyo. Gotta say I love that cover shot of the very Cthulu-inspired tentacles wrapping around the Tokyo Tower and the trailer’s actually a good bit of fun. Being a mock-doc fetishist I’ll take all I can get. Could be a good time… could be Transmorphers Redux. Hoping for the Snakes on a Train / Beast of Bray Road end of the Asylum spectrum.

These guys produce mostly horrible films, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I went on an Asylum buying spree over the past couple of months and now I own just about their entire catalog. Thankfully, most of the DVDs were cheap (I found one for about 10 cents), but their movies are not without some charm - mistakes, crappy production design, and audio problems only add to the fun. There are a few actors they frequently use that are surprisingly decent, such as Rhett Giles and Jeff Denton. Beast of Bray Road was a damn good creature feature, and I’ll be picking this one up along with Alien vs. Hunter (what could this be based on?).

There was a 5 minute piece on Asylum Films on NPR last month. Here’s the link to the audio and some video clips.

Hey, this is quite good. The trailer, I mean. The movie might turn out to be utter garbage, but I have to give credit where credit’s due: the trailer looks pretty damn good.

Hey thanks for posting it Todd.I’ve finally seen it and it was better than one would expect. That’s not to say it’s great, there’s plenty of flaws, but I enjoyed it.I think it’s cool that it was actually filmed in Japan. They seemed to be trying harder with this production than with most of their previous output.
