The Host
Son Ye-Jin… OK, I’m sold.
You realize young actresses are ‘growing up’ when they take roles like this in Korea. Sexy but not vulgar, enough to make viewers understand a certain maturation is taking place, but without rushing to take off her clothes like some have done in the past (which eventually ended up hurting their careers). A good move for Son, who after starring in Hur Jin-Ho’s 외출 (April Snow) and becoming a big star in Japan will continue trying to shed her damsel in distress image she built over the years, with this breezy comedy directed by Oh Gi-Hwan of 선물 (Last Present).
And let’s not forget Song Il-Guk. He’s the son of a very famous actress—Kim Eul-Dong of 마파도 (Mapado)—whose political career he openly supported, creating havoc in the Korean Media for a week. But I couldn’t care less about which political party he belongs to, as he’s been improving at an alarming rate over the last few years. Although he started in the late 90s, his role in the TV Dramas 해신 (Emperor of The Sea) and 애정의 조건 (Terms of Endearment) cemented him as one of the most interesting young stars in the business.
Sounds like your usual romantic comedy, but given the cast, things could get interesting. In recent Korean films you often see parades of 선수 (literally player, but also slang for.. well, ‘player’?), masters of seduction going after their prey. But what if the masters are two, and they end up fighting each other? They’ll fall in love, obviously. Wahhh… how creative. Still, have no problem with breezy romantic comedies like this, unless they start pretending they’re an erotic comedy, something they clearly are not—연애술사 (Love in Magic) and its promotion ring a bell…
‘The Art of Seduction’ also stars Ahn Sun-Young and Hyun Young, and could be a sleeper hit of the Christmas season, as it releases on December 22. Take a look:

ahhh definitely more interesting news than “april snow"… i remember how i yawned just hearing the title of “april snow” hee hee..
song il gook! & son yeh jin might just burn up the cinema screen.. the poster looks HOT!
I’ve never been a big fan of Son tho.. :/ she’s never really convinced me as an actress… the only place I saw her in a different light was in “A Moment To Remember”.. I did see some improvement there…
the last comedy film she was in, the one with cha tae hyun ( i can’t even remember the name of it cause it was so bad) I thought she just looked like another poster girl and it was bad enough that the script sucked.
Seems that she’s getting endless film offers tho… and I can’t avoid from giving her another chance because of it :/

Son’s acting hasn’t been put to the test yet, essentially. April Snow was the first real ‘meaty’ role she’s done, and although ‘A Moment to Remember’ was total 신파, she wasn’t bad there.
I’d rather have her gradually extend her range than completely change, and feel like a fish out of water. I’m just glad she won’t be the next Choi Ji-Woo.

Son Ye Jin has made a shock transmission from an innocent girl to a sedutive woman! Can’t wait to watch “The Art Of Seduction”.

Actually Son was awarded several movie awards in Korean already.
2002, Movie Critics Award, Best New Actress for ‘Lover’s Concerto’
2003, BaekSang and DaeJongSang, Best New Actress for ‘The Classic’
She was also nominated for Blue Dragon Best Actress in 2005 for her role in April Snow which meant she has put in top 5 performance as an actress in 2005. This was to be the only nomination for the movie ‘April Snow’. It was well-known that there was no script and little directing in April Snow and all the more her good performance was astonishing.
Given that she has only started her movie acting career in 2002, her numerous nominations and awards speak well of her acting skills.
Admittedly, Crazy First Love was a lousy movie and script was bad and her role was supposed to be poster girl. Her acting in it was also so so. Not so if it was due to her being inexperienced or bad directing.
Arts of Seduction is a major test for her and the trailer and news look good so far.

oh… it’s a gradual change and I like that. But let’s not joke ourselves: this ain’t no test. Showing you can do sexy and comic acting is just a natural progression her job demands, unless you want to play the Drama Queen for your entire career (like Choi Ji-Woo).
April Snow was a big challenge, now we’ll see what she chooses in the future. Jeon Do-Yeon in Happy End, or Moon So-Ri in 바람난 가족 (A Good Lawyer’s Wife) were major tests, or getting closer to our planet, Kim Hye-Soo in 얼굴없는 미녀 (Hypnotized) is a major test. Shaking your assets in a romantic comedy is not much of a test. Although I’ll enjoy it for what is.
Still, she’s one of the sweetest actresses on TV at the moment, as long as she chooses decent projects like this, she will be OK.

Although generally a comedy role is usually not to be taken seriously, but good acting can still shine through in a comedy role.
For example, many people didn’t expect Ye jin to shine in April Snow because of her supporting role but she did.
It’s true that being funny and sexy is a natural progression for most actresses. But Ye jin can still thrive to be the most sexy and most funny. Most people won’t expect her to be really convincing in a sexy and comedy role so she has a lot to prove.
In any kind of role, as long as you are among the top, you will be recognised. Her performance in AoS will determine how well she scores in her ‘test’ as a comedian and ‘sexy’ actress.
