The Science Of Sleep
Amazon just set up a pre-order page for Tsai Ming-Liang’s “I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone”, with a release date of November the 6th.
The distributor allegedly is Strand Releasing, known for publishing several Gay & Lesbian-themed titles in the past. If it’s true they’re the ones releasing this I applaud them for it, as this is the first DVD release of this film I’ve heard of. To have it be English-friendly is bliss.
I missed it last year when it played in the Rotterdam Film Festival but the word-of-mouth on it was insanely high, with people even declaring this a masterpiece. The film has been banned-unbanned-banned-unbanned in its home country because of some homosexual content, but it’s more about relationships in general (across race, across sexual preference) than trying to push some sort of ‘agenda’. Tsai Ming-Liang apparently is very skillful at using time to manipulate the audience’s attention: he includes long static shots, but the end result is anything but boring.
This title has been recommended to me with extreme prejudice, and I trust the source.

I saw this film in the theatre the other night, and it is, in fact, distributed by Strand Releasing, so I think it’s a pretty good bet that they’ll be releasing the DVD. If you’re a fan of Tsai Ming-liang, then there’s a good chance you’ll love the movie. If you’re not, you’re in for a unique and wonderful cinematic experience.

As Mcolford said, “If you’re a fan of Tsai Ming-liang, then there’s a good chance you’ll love the movie.” But if you’re not, then there’s a good chance you’ll hate it.
Word of mouth is high, but I found this movie incredibly boring, and with no cinematography at all. Just an extreme and radical “asian art-house film” cliché.
