TEETH is Trailerized

Already a bit of a Sundance hit, Teeth is the latest indie film attempt to bring a potentially exploitive subject into the relative mainstream.  The trailer for Mitchell Lichtenstein‘s vaginal dentata drama/horror/comedy plays rather coy (but not too coy) with the details.  Nevertheless, in the ensuing print and media promotion, you are likely going to find it hard to avoid these kinds of mild spoilers (if you haven’t already).  Initial reaction, much like other exploitive/mainstream crossovers (e.g. David Slade‘s Hard Candy and Lynne Stopkewich‘s Kissed - note the oral theme going here) has been mixed but leaning positive.  The Sundance festival gave an award to lead actress Jess Weixler for her performance here.  Personally, I think the trailer plays up the horror angle a bit much, but since I’ve not seen the film at this point, I can’t say how well the film balances the horror, drama and comedy elements.  Grafting female body anxiety onto a horror film in such a way also is reminiscent of the fab Canadian werewolf film Ginger SnapsTeeth should be showing up in some sort of North American limited release in February 2008.

The innocent teenager, Dawn - so innocent she’s not even aware of her own basic bodily functions - discovers quite by accident that she is anatomically very unique, a state of being that is both victimizing and incredibly empowering.  Her boyfriend is getting a little aggressive, and her bad brother is the poster child for immoral teenage conduct.

That looks like the most uncomfortable film for a male to sit through since Hard Candy (like you mentioned). The critic quote is right - audiences WILL be daring themsevles to see it. I am doing so right now - although I don’t think I have the guts to.

I got a chance to see this at the Denver Film Festival last week.  The movie is actually a lot funnier than the trailer makes it out to be.  I was laughing and cringing at the same time during some of the scenes.  Jess Weixler does a very good job as the virginal Dawn.  Overall it’s a great movie, and I’d highly recommend it.

Wow this trailer is fantastic. Hope the film is as effective.
