Go Shibata’s Late Bloomer is one of the more interesting stories to come out of Japan in recent years.  A passion project from its young director the film took years to complete and more years to be cleared for distribution in Japan thanks to music rights in the film.  But while waiting for the legal issues to be resolve the film went on to win huge acclaim at festivals around the globe, Shibata having made an absolutely unflinching film about a severely disabled man - as played by an actual severely disabled man - who becomes a serial killer.

The wait for a local distributor has proven rather a lot shorter with Tidepoint Pictures bringing it to audiences on this continent and if you’re curious as to what the buzz is about then you can check out the English subtitled trailer in the Twitch Player below the break.

It’s worth noting that World’s End Girlfriend provided the music for the film.  He’s an astonishing musician with very refined tastes when it comes to art.  I know little about Go Shibata but the fact that he was given permission to use this music gives me confidence in this film being a good one.  Bring it on home Tidepoint Pictures.

the trailer reminds me of Crispin Glover’s It is Fine! Everything is fine!

saw this back in 2005 when it screened on the IFFR, and was blown away by it. The soundtrack as mentioned above is a piece of art, but what makes it really interesting is the way the director uses it for his movie.

this film is awkward at times, hilariously funny and heartbreaking at others, i thoroughly recommend it.
