This is partly intended as a reference for those who simply read and follow the site, partly a tool for those that are picking films up for USA license. Not that companies won’t already be generally on top of these things, it’s a fundamental part of how such companies work of course, but these lists relate directly to Twitch coverage and interest shown by us and comment makers.

Back in May of 2006, I began going through the archives picking out those titles of films which most stand out as being of interest. At that time, I covered from September 2004 (when the site started) until December 2005. That list has now been updated to show the current situation with regards to those films - more than half of which have gone on to appear on a DVD somewhere with English Subtitles (usually the USA or HK) or are about to appear in more than one place. Some clearly still haven’t appeared, so I include that list to show what’s missing that we hope to be able to see - companies take note, please.

More recently I have trawled through the remainder of our archives, January until the end of August 2006. Many more titles appear in this particular list, but many of them have already been picked up for a release on DVD with English Subtitles, mostly for the USA. Some can easily be described as ’more than likely‘ to appear in such a form, because they’re either HK or Korean film releases of note. Then there’s the obligatory list of those whose status we’re not aware of.

Some half a dozen (at most) are Japanese films that (god willing, as it were) we hope to catch wind of as they’re announced (long in advance hopefully) and we will then do a standard ’Subtitle This‘ post as we have done in the past. They are likely to be : ’Death Note‘, ’Gods Left Hand, Devils Right Hand‘, ’Udon‘, ’Whispering of the Gods‘, and ’Zombie Self-Defence Force‘ unless they’re already set of out there - the last in the list might well be, but this is a lot to keep track of.

Don’t worry, this isn’t the end of the efforts, just a recap, an update, a pointer.

Since Death Note had a theatrical release in HK, I presume there will be a subtitled cheapo dvd (thank God!)

  2. Dhal 09/12/2006 @ 8:51am

There isn’t It’s Only Talk (Ryuichi Hiroki) in this list!!!

  3. robix 09/12/2006 @ 9:49am

Ichigo no Kakera has english subtitles on at least one disc. They copy I watched was engsubbed (not fansubbed).

  4. logboy 09/12/2006 @ 9:56am

youre right robix - i just went off and checked the specs (it came out end of august 06 on DVD in japan) and it says english subtitles :

    苺の破片 Catalogue Number : ASBY-3030

I don’t know if this is strictly appropriate, but any chance of adding the TV-bound parts of the Bayside Shakedown series to that list? I’ve been making do with fan subs of the original series, but I’d kill for a nice subbed boxset of it and the 5 or so TV movies that followed.

  6. robix 09/12/2006 @ 2:46pm

Linda Linda Linda is the most vexing for me, since it is playing at festivals with English subs. There has to be interest here for it, with the guy from Smashing Pumpkins responsible for the soundtrack.

  7. roy_stalin 09/12/2006 @ 3:00pm

Also from the director of Calamari wrestler, is Kabuto-Ô Bîtoru

Also Yam Yasothon and Ghost Variety both staring Petchtai Wongkamlao need subtitled releases.

  8. Mictian 09/13/2006 @ 4:38am

“There isn’t It’s Only Talk (Ryuichi Hiroki) in this list!!!”

The japanese title is “Yawarakai Seikatsu”.

I’ve found like 4 articles here on twitch about this movie. It’s really strange that it doesn’t appear in the list…

For me, Yawarakai Seikatsu is simply an absolute masterpiece of modern cinema.

  9. logboy 09/13/2006 @ 10:50am

well, mictian, this list was drawn up by me over many hours. it was posted in the moderators area of the forum for others to input on, and everyones welcome to input and add others they think are of interest here. not logical though, to wonder why one film is on the list versus why one isnt - there are 4300+ posts at this point on twitch, theyre not easy to go through, not easy to pick from (because nobody will have seen even a large percentage of them, potentially) and its never going to be more than one (or several) peoples opinions taken from an overall sense of whats been covered and what stodd out from it all.

  10. Mictian 09/13/2006 @ 11:25am

Maybe I don’t read the forum.

Maybe I only wanted to give my contribute.

    Maybe.

  11. logboy 09/13/2006 @ 11:30am

matician - the moderators area of the forum is for contributors only. if you only want to give your opinion, in terms of adding to the list and saying something good about a film, fine. if you want to criticise the work and individuality that went into the list, think again.

  12. Onderhond 09/13/2006 @ 12:24pm

Su-ki-da is missing, just saying smile. I believe there are EN subs available. Even seen it on a banner here I think.

  13. Mictian 09/13/2006 @ 1:36pm

“if you only want to give your opinion, in terms of adding to the list and saying something good about a film, fine.”

That is exactly what I’ve done.

“ It’s really strange that it doesn’t appear in the list...”

But, if this for you means to “criticise the work and individuality that went into the list” I can’t do nothing, only laugh, “maybe”.

    Ok, love you.

    Love Twitch.

  14. bobby 09/13/2006 @ 2:09pm

Quit being a fucking bellend mictian

  15. Esh 09/13/2006 @ 3:19pm

I’m pretty sure logboy was being the ‘bellend’ for overreacting at someone pointing out a film wasn’t there.

  16. logboy 09/14/2006 @ 1:30am

very amusing. there was no ‘over reaction’ there, because it was a clear, sober, simple, true observation i have no qualms or pains to make. add suggestions, question ideas, dont criticise individuality. easy as that.

  17. roy_stalin 09/17/2006 @ 5:46pm

Keep this topic at the top, awesome post by logboy.

  18. peter chrisp 10/17/2006 @ 5:35am

let’s hope your wrong on many of them, you would think most of the

movies would appear sometime with English sub-titles. If they’re

Japanese or Korean movies no doubt you would think with the massive market and interest especially in horror from the above, it would be automatic. I remember when Re-Cycle first appeared on dvd from it’s native country it took just on 2-3 months for an English sub-title, and the way i look at it i guess this is more on hope, no doubt when they arrive as all movies will on dvd it’s just a matter of patience, as with your list above i am screaming

for “Colic”, “God’s Left Hand Devils Right Hand”, Death Note 1&2;"Norikas Dinner Table” “Silk” at least it’s due by the 1st of December “The Host” that one i am also hanging out bad too. Would

anyone know when the Thai horror “Scared” will be available with

    sub-titles?
