Stunning Full Theatrical Trailer For DER BAADER MEINHOF KOMPLEX!

Back in July we posted the first teaser for upcoming German true-life action drama Der Baader Meinhof Komplex.  The film tells the real story of the Red Army Faction, a terrorist group that plagued Germany throughout the late sixties and early seventies, orchestrating assassinations and bombings throughout the nation.  That early teaser was impressive enough in its own right but the full theatrical trailer has now also arrived and it is absolutely jaw dropping.  Not only does this look to be a complex treatment of a serious and topical issue but it is blessed with a stellar cast and the technical end - the film is evidently loaded with enough gun play, car chases and explosions to keep even those raised on the films of Michael Bay happy - is positively astounding.  This looks stunning.  Absolutely stunning.  You’ll find both the teaser and trailer below the break in the Twitch Player.

    holy crap.
i am german and i didn’t know this movie existed.
i know lots of the actors, and their are pretty good in general, but here, they look really really good.
can’t wait to see this in action.
damn, i tried to write down the text of the conversations, because i wanted to translate it into english, that you guys can understand the actors, but it’s too much. more than two pages of german text…

Breathtaking trailer, one of the best I’ve seen for a long time. I’d love to see a subtitled version (my knowledge of the German language extends to a few Rammstein songs!), and that’s definately one to put on the radar.
Any idea of a release date for this?

it starts in germany at the 25th of september.

the production company and bernd eichinger (the dreadful megalomaniac producer) issued gag orders on ALL the reporters previewing the movie. some of those claims in the contracts critics have to sign have been that severe that a few famous german newspaper plain refused to sign and review the movie.
those that have seen it are not very amused and said it’s no blockbuster, not even a arthouse movie, more like a complete failure. so the PR office will have to take over and make it an event movie just like “the untergang” so they get their paying customers.

into it. especially after watching the Stockholm 75 documentary a few weeks ago

anton_es, I’m not sure I’m buying that story (the bit about the PR company doing that to stop bad reviews from keeping people from watching the film). According to your link, the journalists were not allowed to write about the film before September 17. That’s a full week before the release, so I really don’t see how that would be too late to generate a negative buzz. Usually reviews appear in the week leading up to the release anyway.
Maybe they have the gag orders (a terrible idea in any case), because they want to built up anticipation, I don’t know. I just don’t think this other theory is very logical.

    thx for your reply.
anyways, I’ve seen a preliminary screening and can say that while it has been shot, produced and directed in a professional manner (you can watch it without breaking your eyes) it falls short of its goals in every way.
it’s the typical “washed-out” history-manipulating piece of would-be cinema I expect from Mr.Eichinger and his “no-edges” production company.
it’s good entertainment but regarding to the subject matter and 1000s of different stories and docs already released about it it fails short, you could even accuse it of “one-eyed-ness” and “lack of scope” just like TheUntergang was utterly disappointing and a needless movie.
So, another movie about the RAF and the BaaderMeinhof Group would be appreciated, but this time a director and producer with a vision please, not a checkbook.
it’s still a good movie, but only on a pure entertainment level.

Thanks for your short review, anton! smile I have to say though I’m not too surprised. I mean, really, Uli Edel and Bernd Eichinger? Also, it always strikes me as a tad suspicious, if a film is star-studded to that extent…
I might still go and see it, for the entertainment factor you mention, but I’ll probably pass on it.

yeah, since requiem by Chr.Schmidt I didn’t see any good german movie of late.
well, the lifes of others was very OK. but the german cinema always teases but never delivers. there really needs to come out a german equivalent to, e.g. TheDarkKnight in terms of scope, depth AND performance on box-office. They are almost there, all it needs is a producer to have the balls to give the right people enough money and not interfere

I can see how German audiences might consider Der Untergang to be “needless” (in contrast, I do not understand the “totally disappointing” at all!), but for many foreign audiences it was an eye-opener.

Even in the Netherlands, where we get pummeled by WW-II documentaries every year around May (our liberation month, when we also commemorate the fallen soldiers of that war), “Der Untergang” made quite an impact. I was impressed, in fact this is the first negative sound I’ve heard about it.
Is this the general consensus in Germany?

  13. anton_es 09/08/2008 @ 4:37am

the general consensus in the “left” press was that it’s a needless movie since so many more stories (and more important) about WWII appear and it was being discussed if it is not a little selfish to show a blockbuster with Hitler as the main protagonist and give him enough breathing room to appear human. it is also historically inaccurate in many cases as picked out by more indepth reviews (i won’t link here, try google).
apart from that it’s shameless oscar bait (confirmed by producer) and has no other reason to exist than Eichinger wanting an oscar (he should have used an KZ setting like “Die Fälscher”, Austria, hahahahaha) and Bruno Ganz wanting to play Hitler and then give 30minutes interviews about “becoming the monster”.
it’s just a vanity project and I think it shows every minute of the movie.
it’s an good-made fkn waste of time.
    go see “Hasenjagd” instead.

    try to translate that:
    http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/18/18339/1.html

it has some valid points. And when you mean GeneralConsensus in Germany with majority of press, then yeah, they loved the movie for all the above reasons: not historical accurate, small scope, actor for hitler is awesome.......????
while on the other hand the same people claim in the newspapers that: “enough is enough, we should stop that dreaded topic about WWII and move on”.

seems as long as you can clap yourself on the shoulder, look: he’s just a funny mad man and Eva just a tad naive, it’s OK but if you get to the meat of the story: COLLOBERATION accross all parts of society (like Hasenjagd ) it’s no longer report-worthy.

so no, general consensus is the movie is awesome, but small, critical and investigated minority nitpicks it but it’s only a movie, it will be forgotten soon. just like this one.
