Studio 4C’s GENIUS PARTY BEYOND Trailerized!

Most anticipated animated feature of the year?  Well, Mamoru Oshii’s Sky Crawlers certainly gives it a good run but I do believe that Studio 4C’s Genius Party Beyond - the second part of their aptly titled Genius Party anthology series - still holds the top spot.  Why?  Because Studio 4C is, for my money, the best animation studio in the world today and this series assembles all of the best talent out there and turns them loose to do their respective things.  Think you know what Japanese animation is supposed to look like?  You may know the past but you don’t know the future until you take agood hard look at what Studio 4C is up to.  This installment features five shorts from directors Koji Morimoto, Mahiro Maeda, Tatsuyuki Tanaka, Shinya Ohira, and Kazuto Nakazawa all of whom embrace very different styles and all of which look very, very impressive.  Based on the trailer my personal favorite is - by far - Morimoto’s Dimension Bomb, which looks just flat out stunning.

The trailer has just arrived online and we’ve got it in the Twitch Player below the break.

DVD for Genius Party would be out 2nd July and is now available for pre-orders on Amazon Japan and HMV Japan.

This looks fantastic. Thanks for posting it and thanks to KuSaNaGI for answering my question about whether the first one is available on DVD yet.

Does it have subs, or rather will I need them? It doesn’t look too wordy.
I love Studio 4C’s work (but no way am I anticipating ANYTHING more than a new audience-friendly Mamoru Oshii...).

As a major Studio 4C and Koji Morimoto fan, I’ve been following Genius Party for what seems like ages, looking forward to being able to buy it on DVD. I can’t tell from the HMV/Amazon pages for the upcoming DVD release whether it’ll include English subtitles (nothing on YesAsia or CDJapan yet), but it may have (the R2JP DVD release of Mindgame did) *fingers crossed*.

Mindgame had English subs, but Studio 4C has bad memories about that: the same day the DVD was released, the enire movie was downloadable from the internet.

They still consider the English subs on the DVD one of the biggest reasons why they couldn’t sell the Mindgame abroad, ironically.
So while I hope for English subs on Genius Party, I don’t count on it…

Looks amazing, I hope it becomes more accesible beyond Amazon Japan.

@Ardvark: Interesting, but to be fair, even if they release without English subs, there’s probably going to be a fansubbed version available to download within a short time, and no official English language release available to buy for those of us who prefer to go down that route.
