Stuart Gordon’s FROM BEYOND Unrated Director’s Cut out on 9/11

This caught my eye as a thumbnail in one of the adverts, and it surprised me because I hadn’t seen this coming earlier:

On the 11th of September the Unrated Director’s Cut of Stuart Gordon’s ”From Beyond”, starring Jeffrey Combs, will be released on DVD.

Legally, I might add.

Though the film isn’t that well known, both Stuart Gordon and Jeffrey Combs have healthy fanbases who have been clamoring for this title for ages. “From Beyond” has a reputation for being rather gory, extreme and very truthful to the spirit and writings of H. P. Lovecraft even though it isn’t based on one of his stories. (EDIT: Oops! As Caterpillar so nicely mentions in the comments, it actually is based on the story “From Beyond” by H. P. Lovecraft. I’ve checked the original strangely discolored manuscript and now I cannot get these images out of my head, curse you, CURSE YOU!!).

And for the first time this title will be released including all the scenes and bits which were originally cut by the MPAA back in the days. With these re-instated it brings the length of this film to an epic 85 minutes!

This one has definately not aged gracefully. I loved this flick when I was a teen and then recently I saw it again, this version in fact. Bleahrg. Crap.

If this is the same one that is shown on Scifi from time to time (obviously edited), it’s definitely not that faithful to the source material—all that pineal gland crap with worms coming out of folks’ foreheads… The short on the Lurker Films collection (forget #) was a lot closer.

Not based on Lovecraft’s stories?!? What are you talking about?!? Gordon’s film is definitely based on Lovecraft’s story FROM BEYOND - written in 1920, published in June of 1934 in The Fantasy Fan. It’s online for free thanks to being in the public domain so go and read it and correct that mistake for the love of Cthulhu!

This will be pretty fun I think. At the Weekend of Horrors in San Jose this year Combs mentioned that the commentary track for this had been in the bag for years, but MGM had been sitting on the DVD. Nice to see they’ve finally let it out. Not as good as Re-Animator, but worth a pickup I think.
