This is why the film opens in the USA early next year then, Satoshi Kon’s ’Paprika‘ is listed as a film likely to compete for the Animated Feature Oscar. Nice. Means an early release, a cinema release, and a possible bit of recognition, and I would love to think this was a general sea-change but it’s still an exception to how things work even when the films turned out by a major studio. Mind you, the list is a lot better than it has been in the past, and oddly includes ’A Scanner Darkly‘ too - not because it’s crap or anything, but because it’s more likely to be described as something between live action and animation, if you see what I mean. Still, with even a cinema release in the States, a film like ’Paprika‘ is still going to find a limited amount of screens and viewers, unfortunately. It opens in Japan before then… [Source : Anime News Networks].

If they want it to be eligible for the Oscar 2007 they will have to give it a release BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR 2006! Of course it could be a 1-2 cinema release for just one weekend.

i always thought it was before end of february - isn’t that why we see sudden rereleases?

To qualify it’s got to be a week long run on at least one screen and accessible to the public before the end of 2006.  Qualifying runs are typically done on the sly, with minimal advance notice, no press, and usually only in crappy matinee slots.
