Never having been a huge fan of the original Sellers Pink Panther show - aside from the great cartoon opening with ‘that’ car - it’s tough to make a call on this, the sequel to the 2006 version. But given Martin’s uncanny ability to stick to any shabby comedy going, I’m a bit sceptical. Maybe it’s one for the kids…

Tough to make a call on this? Not at all.
It’s shit, just like the first one.

I simply don’t understand how anyone can’t find Peter Sellers funny.
One of the great comedic characters of all time.
maybe it’s a generational thing.
Simon Abrams 11/14/2008 @ 1:30pm
Not a generational thing, a personal thing, i think. He was well after my time and while I find the PINK PANTHER sequels to all be cheesy, they’re comedic gold when compared to what came after them in the series. Then again, they were hardly the high art people would like to remember them as; Sellers just had better schtick and more enjoyable material, though not better by a vast margin. I mean, people complain about Martin’s entries as if Blake Edwards hadn’t used the character to cash a ch
eck before that when in fact that’s hardly the case. There was INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU (1968) starring Alan Arkin, there was the SON OF THE PINK PANTHER (1993) starring Roberto Benigni and there was TRAIL OF THE PINK PANTHER (1982), which they started to film and then Sellers died, so to recoup their investment, they just cobbled together a joyless and utterly unfunny story about Clouseau’s death arranged with stock footage.

Oh and lets not forget CURSE OF THE PINK PANTHER (1983), which starred Roger Moore as Clouseau. Yipes.

Roger Moore was Clouseau AFTER plastic surgery, and I rather enjoyed the whole thing. But I’m old enough to have followed the entire series and—with the exception of the Alan Arkin film- I loved them all—up through Sellers’ death. Re: Steve Martin…. it’s not like Sellers was replaced, and who better to take a shot than Steve Martin? There will never be a combo like Sellers & Blake Edwards at their peak, but enjoyable films can STILL be made. I think you should cut Steve Martin some slack!
Simon Abrams 11/14/2008 @ 2:07pm
I don’t disagree (re: enjoyable films still be able to be made) but I think trying to do so with the character at this point is pointless. I like Steve Martin and I like Clouseau; the two are just not a good mix, I think, or more exactly, the material isn’t strong/funny enough to make the match work for me.

Peter Sellers was a great actor in all fronts, and he was actually quite diverse, comedy just happen to be his big selling point.
Also, the original Pink Panther flicks are cheesy and haven’t aged well at all, but, it’s Sellers what makes them tolerable and fun to watch. The supporting cast was also usually good.
