This is a good time for Spanish language film, right? Spanish language films and films by Spanish directors are cleaning up at the international box office and taking home awards by the cart load so everything must be fantastic, yes? Well, apparently everywhere but Spain. While talking with Time Crimes director Nacho Vigalondo about the difficulties getting new films made and distributed in his home country he greatly lamented the lack of vision, the lack of funding, and the general apathy within the Spanish film industry despite its international successes. And here’s some shocking news to back that up, lest you think Vigalondo is making too big a deal of the issues that plague all film makers: Sogecine, Spain’s most successful film producer for over a decade, is halting film production entirely. They have two films currently in the works that will be completed and then they are no more. Not because of a lack of success, not because they haven’t produced good work, but simply because the parent company doesn’t care about film. At all. Recent productions from Sogecine include Almenabar’s The Others and The Sea Inside, Alex de Iglesia’s Ferpect Crime and Julio Medem’s entire film output. Now, if the profitable and respected companies are opting out of film production what does that say for the rest of the industry? Ouch.
