We are big fans of Spanish director Luiso Berdejo around these parts, having covered a number of his short films in the past, and the talented Spaniard is about to make a big splash on these shores with his feature film debut, The New Daughter.  Starring Kevin Costner and Ivana Baquero from Pan’s Labyrinth the film is a supernatural thriller set in the remote countryside.  Here’s the official synopsis:

Kevin Costner stars as John James, a single father who moves to a house in the country with his two children following a painful divorce. Soon, however, his adolescent daughter (Ivana Baquero) begins acting strangely, and the household is plagued by disturbing events. John begins to suspect that the mysterious mound at the edge of the forest may have something to do with her ominous behavior.

Costner is an actor I run hot and cold on - with the right material he’s excellent, with the wrong material he struggles badly - but this looks to play into one of his seldom-tapped strengths - anybody else remember The War? - and the balance of supernatural elements and character work - particularly character work involving children - plays right into Berdejo’s wheelhouse.  This man’s a huge talent and I expect good things here.

We’ve been given the first look at a new still from the picture, which you’ll find linked below, and there are more images on the Gold Circle website.
