Be Kind, Rewind

A wee piece of news here that actually broke on Friday but is worth mentioning and since nobody else has, here I go ...
There has been much wailing and gnashing of teeth over the prospect of Will Smith and Steven Spielberg teaming up to make an American version of Oldboy but Smith has offered up some reason to hope for the project. How so? According to an interview here the American Oldboy will not be a remake of the Park Chan Wook film but will instead be a fresh interpretation of the original Japanese manga - source material that Park himself strayed significantly from. So, not a remake but a different version from the same source. It may be splitting hairs but I feel better about this.
So ... this leave the Gore Verbinski produced remake of The Host as the next logical target for anti-remake-angst ...

Isn’t that like remaking The Godfather, but saying your remake is based on the Mario Puzo book, not the movie?
Just sayin’...

I believe the technical term for this is “laughable”.

“but Smith has offered up some reason to hope for the project.”
That he won’t appear in it?

This does give cause for hope, as there are a lot of other directions you could go with the source material. The story in the manga seems much more amenable to American adaptation than Park Chanwook’s vision. So I’ve gone from “Totally convinced it’ll be awful but secretly highly amused” to “Cautiously curious and optimistic.”

so it’s the manga (which is basically the same iconic characters) without the nasty bits. ho-ho-ho. maybe they aim for a christmas 2009 release.

Is that supposed to give us hope???? The only thing that can give me hope for this project is if they trash it. This is indeed “laughable”. For Will Smith and Steven Spielberg to think that its a GOOD thing is beyond understandable. I don’t know what becoming of them! Will Smith is already doing a fucked up movie (Which i believe is coming out in December) and now he’s actively pursuing this? NO WAY.

I don’t need any hope for this, because i’m not seeing it. Maybe if it was a different actor and director, but Spielberg and Smith? No thanks.

Well, I think there is absolutely no difference between doing a movie from the manga or doing a remake of the movie. For a lot of people, even if this movie is an adaptation or a remake, the title will be the same so the link will goes to the same thing. Even if it doest look exactly like he movie because the intention will be to make a Old Boy movie. I personally dont get big hopes for that. It will probably be a huge commercial shit without interrest but sure, for America, Old Boy will be created on their land.

What nonsense. There is no reason that the source material should be forever viewed in deference to one particular cinematic vision, however masterfully it was executed. I understand that people will probably compare it to the Korean film, but that makes the decision to base it off the manga all the smarter.
I don’t think it will be a patch on Park Chanwoon’s work, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be bad and I am legitimately curious to see what they come up with. I am a fan of the manga as well, so I would like to see another attempt at translating it for the screen.

the thing is, the movie has the same plot as the manga. he took some liberties here and there for the conclusion but: incarceration, breakout -> revenge, mystery why he was imprisoned, all those elements are from the manga. what would they wanna do different ?
