SOM TAM Trailer Makes Me Laugh So Hard It Hurts …

... though surely I don’t hurt as bad as the guy Nathan Jones kicks through a plane.

We posted up the poster for this one just yesterday and today Wise Kwai has spotted the trailer and it’s a blast.  For those unfamiliar, Nathan Jones is the behemoth of a man who fought Jet Li in Fearless and Tony Jaa in Tom Yum Goong - one of only two men in the world who can make that claim, and I’ll give a candy to anyone who can name the other without looking it up - and also is featured in Troy.  Calling him enormous is a bit of an understatement.  So what has Thai film company Sahamongkol done to him here?  They’ve cast him opposite children, of course.  It’s a martial arts comedy in which Jones stars as a homeless and very timid foreigner living on the streets of Bangkok who is taken in by two young girls, one of whom is familiar to fans of Born To Fight.  He’s quiet and peaceful until he eats a bowl of very spicy papaya salad - the Som Tam of the title - at which point buildings are destroyed and aircraft collapse in terror.  This looks hysterical.  And also painful in the funnest possible way.

You’ll find the trailer embedded below the break.

Interesting recreation of the Popeye myth.

Has “Popeye” been elevated to mythological status at this point?  I mean, if so, good, but I was unaware of that being the case.

And this looks pretty amazing.  What sort of sad child wouldn’t want to watch it?

And is the claim that he’s one of two men who fought against Jet in FEARLESS and Tony in TOM YUM GOONG, or that he’s one of two men that’s fought on film against both Jet and Tony, in whatever?  Not that I could answer without cheating either way.

Nathan also fought Jackie Chan, can’t remember the film, but it’s a late 90’s flick i think.

Wow. This looks pretty fucking awesome. And Jones looks like a decent actor as well. Good show taking the piss out of himself.

Pretty sure he fought Jackie in First Strike, the Aussie segment of the film in the hotel.

I meant he’s one of two people to fight both Tony and Jet, period.  The other guy hasn’t fought Jackie that I’m aware of.

It is Johnny Nguyen.  He is the gang boss that Tony fights in the restuarant.  He is one of the henchmen in Cradle To Grave.  I am waiting to see the Rebel, which he wrote and produced.

I was thinking this was more like “Drunken Master” except substitute Drunk with “Heart Burnt.”
