It must be the Spring, or how else would you explain the recent activity in the Korean DVD market, after a rather underwhelming firs few months of 2006?

I’m sure many people were asking themselves where that long announced ‘Revenge Trilogy Boxset’—in case you prefer rocks to normal houses, that would be Park Chan-Wook’s 복수는 나의 것 (Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance), 올드보이 (Oldboy) and 친절한 금자씨 (Sympathy For Lady Vengeance)—went. Development hell? Just dropped out of the picture? Naah. It gets interesting:

A DVD Prime regular phoned CJ Entertainment’s HQ, and they replied they’re still working on the Boxset, but because they’re adding MORE content (meaning, more tasty extra features, stuff that wasn’t in the previous releases), it’ll take a while. And ‘while’ means second half 2006, or knowing the market, closer to Christmas than Chuseok. Of course Park’s 싸이보그지만 괜찮아 (I’m a Cyborg, But That’s Ok) just happens to release this December, so that would be the perfect time of the year. I mean, what could be possibly better than finding delusional cyborg girls and a mammoth Boxset release of some great films under your Xmas tree?

Maybe some Kim Ki-Young films…

Yes. Y-E-S. YEEEEEEESSSSS! I was patiently waiting for this boxset for years and never bought any DVDs. Great news X and MORE content is always welcome, yeeehaaaw.

cant wait to see how big this box set will be, i allready have the 3-disc version of oldboy, and imported lady vengeance.

if this boxset can beat that, i’ll buy it.

i can always use oldboy and lady vengeance as birthday presents raspberry

I’m thinking 6 or 7 Discs, but nothing’s been announced yet.

Should be an extra disc for every film, plus another one with some other extras (maybe a few of his shorts).

Hell, they could have gone the extra mile and add Trio to that.

While the the films ranged from above average to very good, I don’t think I’ll be tripledipping on this one. Might reconsider if the extras were subbed (pretty darn unlikely) and the price right.

Although, I’m interested in seeing if they will remaster Sympathy for mr. vengeance to be on par with the new Tartan R1 release. I doubt they’ll touch the other two films as the existing releases for them are pretty good already. And as always, I’m intrigued by the cover art for this - Korean DVD editions almost always look mighty fine despite the quality of the actual film.

Speaking of more content, Toshiba is releasing Old Boy on the spanking brand new HD DVD media.

What I REALLY want is some Lady Vengeance eyeshadow. I can’t find that shade anywhere!

    Fabool-

You are on the money about the R1 Tartan Mr V—what an improvement over the CJ Entertainment disc! My favorite film of the trilogy, and one of my favorite Korean films, period. I won’t be double-dipping for this box set, but for those who haven’t already purchased all three films, this would be a no-brainer (provided that they remaster Mr V.)

YES !!! That’s good news, finally.

What dvd editions would you purchase if buying them separetly ???

  9. Fabool 05/21/2006 @ 10:16am

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance: R1 Tartan - best image quality hands down.

Oldboy: Tartan R2UK - Image quality on par with other releases and subbed extras.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance: R3KOR - includes the fade to black and white version, which currently isn’t available on any other version.

Those are pretty much the best picks in my opinion.

Thanx, Fabool. There are so many editions out, especially for Oldboy ...

May i ask you too about the Memories of Murder DVD edited by Tartan ?

    Thanks.

  11. Fabool 05/21/2006 @ 2:32pm

Tartan hasn’t released Memries of murder. Palm pictures has released it on R1 - I don’t know about it personally but if I remember correctly from reviews it has a fairly good image.

Optimum released it on R2UK as well, but the disc has some nasty artifacts and it is a NTSC-PAL conversion which causes a good deal of combing. I would avoid that version if possible.

The Korean disc is good in all aspects but only has subs for the main feature.

You can search some reviews of the different editions from: http://www.dvd-basen.dk/uk/home.php3

  12. El Duderino 05/21/2006 @ 2:56pm

    You’re right, i meant Optimum.

Ok, then i go for the CJ dvd.

Thanks for the link, i normally look on dvdcompare, but i like to have some opinion from other people. smile

  13. Fabool 05/21/2006 @ 4:31pm

I don’t use dvdcompare much as many of their ‘comparisons’ seem to compare only the specs of different releases. Even if three discs say they are all ‘1.85:1 Anamorphic’, some may be bad NTSC-PAL conversions, have artifacts or what not.

dvd-basen is nice as it links to a good selection of different sites from which you can form your opinion of what is a worthy release.

Many asian releases have little to no reviews though, which means you may need to do some Google + Babelfish magic to dig up info from foreign sites and forums, if available.

  14. El Duderino 05/21/2006 @ 7:04pm

What you say about dvdcompare is true, but fore a quick look it’s ok.

Thanx again for the link. smile

  15. Tory 05/22/2006 @ 1:57pm

I think I’ll buy this if it’s subbed, which it porobably won’t be. I don’t own and haven’t seen Mr. and Lady Vengeance yet though.
