SHUTTER and ALONE Directors Go Solo In Horror Anthology PHOBIA

Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom, the young Thai directors of the original version of Shutter and the currently being remade Alone, are without a doubt the best things going in Thai horror film today.  With Nakata and Kurosawa stepping away from the genre where they made their name, Shimizu seemingly content to repeat himself forever, and the number of decent horror films out of Korea in the past couple years so small I could count them on one badly mutilated hand you could probably even make a pretty good case for the pair being the best thing going in Asian horror film in general these days.  So when they make something new it pays to pay attention.

What they’ve done this time is direct separately for the first time in their career, each of them contributing one segment to the four part Thai horror anthology 4bia, a film whose name is a remarkably bad and mispronounced pun.  Bad title or no, these guys have the goods and their presence alone makes this one to immediately seek out.  Each entry is meant to key in on a different fear and for their parts Pisanthanakun tells a campfire haunting tale while Wongpoom looks more compelling, with the story of a stewardess required to be the sole escort of the body of a dead Thai princess on a flight home.

You can find the trailer below the break and you can find a very detailed breakdown of the entire film over at WiseKwai.

These guys certainly do make good AND good-looking films.  With striking imagery, generally good acting, high production values and some good creativity to boot, you can pretty much rely on their films to at least offer something worth viewing.

This one is utilizing a bit of tired theme, but the trailer had me wanting to see it regardless.  Hopefully it’ll make it over to the ‘states before it gets sent to remake hell… mad
