Okay, we first wrote about this one back in April but for those whose memories don’t stretch back quite so far, here’s the skinny.  In the aftermath of the massive global success of Shaolin Soccer - a film you really haven’t seen if you’ve only seen the butchered US version - the pressure was on Stephen Chow to go the safe route and make a sequel.  But he didn’t.  He made Kung Fu Hustle instead and is currently wrapping up his sci-fi picture A Hope.  But the forces of commerce just wouldn’t let Chow’s martial arts sports franchise die and so it did what all good franchises do when they’re not feeling the love at home:  it moved.

Shaolin Girl is an officially sanctioned follow up to Shaolin Soccer, though obviously not a direct sequel.  It’s a fully Japanese production with Chow on board as a producer, the lead character now a lacrosse playing girl.  It’s been in production for a good while and the first teaser has arrived.  The verdict?  Really shockingly good, actually.  This looks like good fun and Kou Shibasaki seems like a fun choice in the lead.

Hmm, Shaolin Soccer was great, but some second rate sequel? I don’t kn… Kou Shibasaki you say? Highly anticipated!

This looks very entertaining, if nothing else.  It looks more like another story set in the same universe than any sort of sequel.  If it is a story that reflects the widespread adoption of supernatural martial-arts ability among everyday people, as set up at the end of SHAOLIN SOCCER, then all I can say is “I want to see this as soon as possible.”  That universe would be a fun place to spend a couple more hours.
