Swallowtail Butterfly
And so the slow transition to worthwhile HD purchases continues. Seriously, not sure how relevant HD is to a lot of what I choose to watch, and the trade off between upscaling to 1080p and true 1080p, considering the cost comparisons of DVD to BR (DVD is about half the price, if not less, perhaps a third even) means that I’m finding criteria read like this : good theatrical animation, buy HD form… everything else, at the moment, DVD. ’Tekkon Kinkreet‘ seems to have started shipping out yesterday (please, also consider buying the all-in-one manga reissue out in America too, it’s lovely, so I hear), at least my copy is on it’s way from the states, and it’s due out next week if you’re looking to catch up with that and this upcoming other theatrical animation of note this year. Oh, there’s a couple more of those around, aren’t there? ’Tokikake‘ should be sent out from Korea in the next few days also, and there’s perhaps a couple of others I can’t quite remember right now, some in the near future too. Directly in relation to ’Paprika‘, it’s been a while since the French BR appeared, and there were as many subtitle tracks on that as there surely are known languages on the planet. The film itself, well… I’ve got a sense of it, but I’ll keep my mind fresh to the experience as possible between now and late November. For now…

incredible work - paprika ranks in my top 3 favourite animated films that i’ve seen this year. tekkonkinkreet and aachi & ssipak are the two others. highly recommended!
*the girl who leapt through time was also excellent

I have the Japanese LE DVD Box, but added the Dutch Blu Ray edition to my film collection as well (it’s region free so I can play it on my US player). Why? So that some of my friends can enjoy it with Dutch subs. Also, though the Japanese DVD release already has a really good video quality (+ my player scales it up to 1080i), it comes nowhere near the quality of a 1080p BluRay. The BluRay edition simply blows of the screen. If you’re into Kon’s film or have already seen Paprika and like it: buy the Blu Ray edition, the extra video quality is worth the money (of course that’s just my opinion)!
Now if you’re not convinced why you ought to be spending some extra cash (besides the fact that if you already have a Blu Rray player you probably won’t be that picky about the price)? Well, just think of a nice possible side effect… If the BluRay release of Paprika gets sold decently, it’ll help more anime to be released on Blu Ray as well. The Paprika Blu Ray in terms of extras also contains the Tekkon Kinkreet and Tokyo Godfathers trailers in Full HD and I knew what thought when I saw those “It would be nice if more anime would be released on Blu Ray”.
