The Railroad
There’s no doubt at all that India’s Ram Gopal Varma has been operating at well below his peak abilities for a good few years now. After a string of hugely impressive films both as producer and director RGP seemed to basically go off the rails with a few ill advised and poorly executed films that seriously damaged his credibility both at home and abroad. However, there’s also no doubt at all that Varma’s on top of his game he’s one of the very best in the world and the Indian auteur has a fistful of gritty crime films to his name that rival the very best work by a Scorsese or Mann. And, hopefully, Contract will see him rounding back into form.
Why think so? Well, first of all, the film forms a sort of informal trilogy with earlier efforts Satya and Company. The first film takes a very intimate look at crime, the second delves into large scale crime families (and is one of his very best) and this third film will take the step from internation crime syndicates to international terrorism. Simply promising a return to the style of Company would be enough to attract my attention and I have little doubt that this sort of gritty material is where Varma truly excels. Plus there’s the trailer. Gorgeous and unrelentingly harsh all at the same time. And he does stuff with pigeons that would make John Woo blush. Very nice.
