The Ten
I will not say anything about the proposed casting of this film, nor will I say anything about it being a remake of the classic kung-fu film Five Deadly Venoms. I am trying to behave today. However, YOU all have free reign over this. Read the list. Ponder the possibilities and have at it…
Director Kirk Wong (The Big Hit, Jackie Chan’s Crime Story) says the cast will probably include Jay Chou (Curse of the Golden Flower, Initial D) as the prodigy and Edison Chen (The Grudge 2, Dog Bite Dog, Initial D), Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard, Mission: Impossible III, Naked Weapon), Huang Xiaoming (The Banquet), Wu Jing (Invisible Target, Sha Po Lang, Drunken Monkey) and Liu Chia-Hui (dozens of Show Bros. classics) as the Five Deadly Venoms.
Just to brush up on the story for those unfortunate enough to have never scene the Chang Cheh original. The Five Deadly Venoms was about a young prodigy ordered by his dying master to eliminate five of his previous students, known as the Five Deadly Venoms, who have turned to evil. Each of the Five Deadly Venoms has a lethal skill learned from a toxic animal: The Centipede, Snake, Scorpion, Lizard, and Toad. What is more challenging is that the Master does not know who they were among his students because everyone wore masks. The young prodigy must team up with the right former student in order to defeat the others.
I’ll just be over here… screaming into my pillows.

Jay Chou as the prodigy? Come on. Any non-martial artist is going to look so stupid, next to Wu Jing anyway.

Are the Weinsteins behind this?

it’s a race between kirk wong and quentin tarantino to see who can ruin a beloved, revered martial arts classic the fastest!!!

I only agree with Maggie Q if she plays the snake and Wu Jing, but edison chen...Why? I think he is a semi decent actor, but not good with the martial arts skills.

Not like this is going to prevent the original film’s release.
It’s nice to see Kirk Wong working again; he somehow never managed to make a second Hollywood film. The Big Hit hasn’t aged as well as I hoped, but it was still a blast at the time, and he deserved better.

Edison Chen… ugh.
J-Dogg 05/15/2007 @ 4:39pm
I second that “ugh” for Edison Chen. I think his best role was in Dead or Alive 2, where he only had very little screen time, less dialogue, and was shot in the head almost immediately. Good times!

Edison isn’t a complete waste. He was decent in Dog Bite Dog and Jiang Hu. Jay Chou, however, is one of the worst actors I’ve ever seen.

I surprised on all the hatin’ on Edison. I thought for sure Chou would take the brunt of punishment here. I’m with you Brian.

Edison fuckin’ Chen? No fucking way!! Why don’t they just go ahead and cast the Twins while they’re at it.
Rhythm-X 05/15/2007 @ 11:46pm
Gordon Liu and Wu Jing? Only an idiot would complain about that. Maggie Q? Well, OK, she’a hot and she’s coming off a run of American films, but a Venom? I dunno? Jay Chou - not familiar enough with him to complaiain. Edison Chen? Is the kid from SHAOLIN POPEY dead or something? Call his ass up. I know the kid who was Jet Li’s son in MY FATHER IS A HERO is still kicking around in godawful shot-on-video crap - call him, he’s Venom material. Edison Chen is not totally worthless… but he’s also no Venom.

Kirk Wong apparently sees the Venoms as like chinese X-Men. Sounds crap.
I too am a little suprised about the Edison hating. Did you guys not see Dog Bite Dog? He was a bad ass.
I would have rather seen Nic Tse in this, instead of Jay Chou. Nic can fight.
