PARNASSUS Resurrected?  Depp To Replace Ledger?

As we reported at the time the production of Terry Gilliam’s Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus came to a screeching halt when Heath Ledger passed away last week but it appears there is a possible solution in the works that would both preserve the film and Ledger’s role within it.  Dark Horizons is reporting that Gilliam is pursuing Johnny Depp to continue playing Ledger’s role within the film.  And here’s the thing:  at one point of the story Ledger’s character falls through a magic mirror, essentially transforming into another character and the thinking is this would be a simple place to simply change actors.  It’s an elegant solution, one that preserves Ledger’s performance without the need for gimmickry, it honors the original script and it would finally give Depp and Gilliam the chance to work together after the aborted Man Who Killed Don Quixote.  Nothing is definite yet but Depp is free at the moment so here’s hoping ...

    anyone but depp.  i am so sick and tired of depp.  if this is the only way to get gilliam’s film made then i’ll have no other choice than to agree with the decision.

    That would certainly be a jarring, umbilical-severing moment in the film when Ledger disappears into the mirror and, Prestige-like, is replaced by a Depp-looking doppelgänger. Gilliam might have to take into account the audience’s moment of morbid realisation in the editing room.

    I’m for Depp, but isn’t this challenging the Gods to interfere?

    Last time Depp and Gilliam teamed up didn’t exactly cause a stroke of luck for either of them…
