Dellamorte, Dellamore
Tachiguishi Retsuden, the latest from Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii has been announced for a September 22nd DVD release. Included will be “a deluxe 64-page booklet, replica script (condenced to 120 pages), bonus disc with making-of footage (90 minutes), and more!” Unfortunately, at this point there is no mention of English subtitles, though it’s early yet and most of Oshii’s films have received subtitled releases in Japan in the past.

I don’t understand a lick of Japanese but, with or without subtitles, I want to see that movie.

Well, this film is so incredibly Japanese that I don’t think any American distributor will want to license it. I don’t see this having any sort of big appeal to Western audiences, even with Oshii’s name on it. Unlike with titles such as INNOCENCE, AVALON and even his live action RED SPECTACLES films this won’t cross over. It’s probably most like TALKING HEAD and I believe that only got a R1 release because it was included with two more appealing (to Western fans) movies.

The majority of Oshii’s film have NOT been released with subtitles in Japan. A few of them have (Avalon and Ghost in the Shell), most of them have not.
