Thanks to Paul for pointing this one out ...

Surprisingly few people seem to be aware that Park Chan Wook’s acclaimed film Old Boy was based on a Japanese manga, but it was and come July we’ll all have the chance to check it out and have it make sense, even. Dark Horse Comics have announced that they’ll begin release an English translation of the original manga on July 5th.

Details are here.

Nice, hadn’t seen word on Dark Horse’s plans for Old Boy in a few months. I’ll be checking this one out.

You’re in for a big disappointment. The manga is completely different from the movie. The only common part is that someone gets imprisoned and seeks revenge. No incest. No tooth-torture. Oh well, I’m sure it’ll sell anyway.

knew this was coming for some time, no details on the dark horse website last time i checked so nice to hear it confirmed now for the summer, as expected. just interested to see what its like… know its different, but still worth checking out.

Despite being very different from the resultant film, it’s a quality manga in its own right. The kidnapping-imprisonment is such an enticing premise on its own that there’s a lot of mileage to gain out of it (as both the film and this comic show). After having read the manga, I felt that Park’s film is that much more impressive for being able to weave the story he did from what’s presented in the comic. Maybe “Oldboy” the manga and “Oldboy the movie are like the old “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” - “Blade Runner” argument: both work for what they are, and the latter in both cases is not a strict adaptation.

    It’s about damn time.

I read the comic book. The resemblance ends with both prisoners are released from their respective imprisonment.

Movie if far more original and edgy (which is very unusual in book/comic book to amovie adaptation).

Believe me, even if you haven’t read the comic book version, you are not missing much.
