None of These Things Are Like the Others.

Okay, this is just weird.  Danish arthouse director Susanne Bier (1) has just signed on to direct a romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant (2) and Zhang Ziyi (3) co-written by one of the guys behind Borat (4).  Never expect to see items one through four in the same sentence ever again.  This is just weird.  I like all four of these things rather a lot and the concept of the film - titled Lost For Words it stars Grant as an actor working for a Chinese director (Zhang) who falls in love with her but can only communicate through a translator who is in love with him and thus not really prone to translate his feelings accurately - is a lot of fun but, really?  Bier, Grant, Zhang and Borat all in the same place?  Guh.

The translator-with-motive concept was done somewhat in BOTTLE ROCKET.  And also in Assayas’ IRMA VEP.

This film is a bit of a curio, actually it feels more like a Assayas film with its unusual global cast…

This just went near the top of my list of things to see.  Someday.

Hugh Grant? Thanks for the warning, i’ll stay far far away from this one.

It’s sad to watch Zhang squandering her talents over the last few years. What is this crap? Here’s hoping she comes to her senses and hooks up with Yimou and wkw again. Maybe Mei Lanfang will be a return to form…
