Next For Alex De La Iglesia:  THE YELLOW M

Fans of Spanish maverick Alex de la Iglesia won’t have long to wait for his next film.  Word is now out that Iglesia’s next will be an adaptation of Edgar Jacob’s classic crime comic The Yellow M.  The budget is large and Kenneth Branagh has signed on to play the lead role which should inspire confidence as Branagh generally doesn’t do crap and seems perfectly suited for this sort of retro-throwback film.  Of course people said the exact same thing about Branagh and Wild, Wild West and the sad reality is that an excellent cast couldn’t stop Iglesia’s English-language debut, The Oxford Murders, from turning out to be an absolutely atrocious film.  If this one turns out to be a train wreck as well I’d be willing to wager that’ll be the end of Iglesia working in English ...

He’s also co-writing, co-producing and directing a 26 episode Spanish sci-fi sitcom called PLUTON VERBENERO.

It’s slated for a September premiere.

Here’s his announcement and the production blog.

If it’s anything like a serialized Acción Mutante, this is going to be great!

This is an excellent story though. Think of “The Terminator” as written by Agatha Christie. Edgar P. Jacobs was actually an engineer, so all the techie stuff in his comics were incredibly detailed and always accurate. Whenever Hergé (of Tintin fame) needed a special plane or castle designed, he called upon his good friend Edgar to help him.

    Back to “The Yellow M”:

Its central conceit about a black-clad invulnerable killer with glowing infra-red glasses (a first at the time?) stalking the rainy streets of sixties’ London scared me shitless at age nine.
One of many memories I have of this comic: Mortimer shooting the advancing menace (’merely’ thought to be a very clever catburglar/kidnapper at that point in the story), only to find out bullets won’t harm it. That’s the stuff that gave me nightmares. What if someone was out to get you, and was truly and totally unstoppable? Brrrrr......

It has already been adapted as a very popular radio serial in France and Belgium during the seventies.

People have been trying to turn it into a movie for decades, but its writer/creator Edgar P. Jacobs vetoed all the proposed casting for the Mortimer role.
He did approve of William Hurt, who was mentioned as Blake. Which, at the time (mid-eighties), would have been absolutely spot-on perfect.

I love De La Iglesia, but he does stumble occasionally, even in Spanish.  800 Balas springs to mind.  His Tele-film “The Babys Room” was a revelation though top shelf work.

Can’t wait.  One of the few filmmakers whose entire catalog I can I say I enjoy.  Loved the recent OXFORD MURDERS and THE BABY’S ROOM.

    Oxford Murders “atrocious” ....really?
It was ridiculous no doubt - especially towards the hopelessly convoluted climax - but it was still fairly entertaining and beautifully shot. Hyperbole is starting to get a bit out of hand on ye olde interwebs, words do have power and perhaps we might consider saving letter-bombs like “atrocious” for films that truly deserve them, like Ulli Lommel serial killer flicks.

nice I like Oxford Murders quite a bit, and now the director making a film with Branagh this will be golden.
